I was a senior in college the year this guys show went national.  The last half of my senior year was mostly drinking and having fun but I remember coming home at night (shared a house but a bunch of people) and watching this guy rant and rave and act like a douche.   He used to have Ron Paul on his show and they didn't exactly see eye to eye.

I remember that he loved and glorified smoking and then he got cancer and lost a lung and then blamed tobacco companies for lying to people about the dangers of cigarettes.

there used to be something called moderate Republicans

then the party became dominated by fundies and bat shit crazy types

Good point...I think one of the reasons this occurred is because the Dems got tired of losing and they moved towards the center with Bill Clinton.....So it became that a moderate Republican looked like a conservative Democrat.....this kinda pushed more Republicans to the right to distingusih themselves between themselves and the Dems....

Then Obama got elected and the Repubs went absolutely batshit crazy due to the shock of having a black man as president and then they REALLY lost it and went totally radical
