The Wolf On the Hill
« on: August 18, 2015, 11:06:32 AM »
In Pumping Iron there is a beach debate amongst muscular men sitting on towels tanning about whether the Wolf on the hill who is more hungry will overtake the Wolf on top of the hill.  Arnold cuts it short by telling Eddie Guilani or Ken Waller or someone that the Wolf on top of the hill may not be more hungry but when he wants the food it is there.

This has always bothered me.  I tend to believe in staying hungry and striving to climb bigger hills. It also seems to cut against Arnold's stay hungry philosophy that helped him achieve so much.  Is there a hidden meaning to this, like the hidden meaning in the Riddle of Steel?

The riddle of the Wolf on the Hill encompasses the Riddle of Steel as well.

Immortality. Take it, it's yers.

I'm sure he always bluntly replies when someone says the wolf on top has only one way to go that it can just stay up.

What is this magical "food" that the Wolf on the hill has access to?

The hidden meaning is that Arnold gets in your head, not the other way around.

Arnold wanted to say something cryptic, so that people would discuss it even 40 years after he said it.

once the wolf takes the hill, he should work just as diligently to protect the hill.  Dig trenches filled with water to drown those who approach.  Barriers to entry should grow larger each day, as the pack of wolves trying to take the hill grows accordingly.

Introduce a pity sheep to the herd of starving wolves now and then, just to get them to kill each other to keep the numbers low.

Spread tales of how bad it really is at the top, and plant rumors of how the next hill is where all the glory truly lies.

Also, the spiked heads of the last wolves to approach the peak deliver a nice deterrent.

whats the obsession with hills

if you never get to the hill you can never be over the hill

Arnold will be written about in the history books and this mysterious quote will be attributed to him. And no one will understand it.

I just love the meta aspect of it all.  A bunch of gym rats and the big Wolf.  All of them at the bottom of or barely climbing the hill then Arnold up at the top.

They should pepper the new Conan movie with a bunch of these type of quotes for people to remember just like they did with Crush your enemies ...

No no no.

Wolf is over the hill.
Arnold is always atop of the hill.
Weider, unfortunately is now under the hill.

This. It's like when Serge says "I'm looking to take you" and he replies "keep looking". Although, it made sense there.

So that's what Serge says.  I always thought he said "I'm looking for Katz's tshirt."
