This sprawling building is one of Britain's most desirable addresses but has a dark and secret past.

The posh apartments of Princess Park Manor have been home to today's hottest acts, such as One Direction, The Wanted, JLS and Girls Aloud.
Over-excited fans flock to the majestic pile desperate to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars.

They even pose as possible buyers in the hope local estate agents will show them around.

Yet, less than ten years ago it was a very different story. The Manor was the Friern Hospital and was treating mental patients.

Residents at the hospital, originally called *Hatch Lunatic Asylum, the Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum, were more likely to be infamous than famous. The Victorian institution held Aaron Kosminski, a man suspected of being Jack the Ripper, for three years from 1891 and railway rapist and killer John Duffy in the 1980s.

Occultist

Dorothy Lawrence, who posed as a man to fight in the First World War, and Maria Teresa Ferrari de Miramar, a wife of occultist Aleister Crowley, were also residents.
Thousands of patients were treated at the North London hospital, one of the biggest in the UK, until it finally closed its doors in 1993.

Two years later work started to turn the rundown old building, set in 30 acres of land, into Princess Park Manor. And the dramatic transformation has certainly paid off. If you are under 25 and just starting your pop career the Manor has become THE place to live.

It has a revolving door, with a red carpet waiting for the latest music stars to move in.

Among the other stars to settle in the plush flats in the gated community were late 90s boyband 5ive, rock trio Busted and girl band The Saturdays.
Just last month, One Direction moved out of their apartments, almost certainly paving the way for the next X Factor stars to take their place.

Harry Styles, 18, quit his flat for a mansion in Primrose Hill, north London. Bandmates Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, all 19, and Louis Tomlinson, 20, weren't far behind. It's all a far cry from when Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert laid the foundation stone to architect Samuel Daukes' Italianinspired building in 1849.
The £300,000 hospital which, at its height, would take 3,500 patients was finished two years later.

It boasted the longest corridor in Britain and was so large that it would visitors more than the wards.

There was even a secret tunnel built from New Southgate train station to the building, apparently, in case any famous politicians or royalty were brought in as patients.

In 1889 its control was transferred to the he Lon on on on ondo don County Council, it to the London County Council, it became known as Colney Hatch Mental Hospital, then Friern Mental Hospital in 1937 and finally Friern Hospital.

Its darkest day was on January 27 1903, when a temporary building of wood and corrugated iron caught fire, killing 52 of the 320 women patients. The victims were trapped behind metal bars with no fire escapes or any way to battle the blaze.

Life in the Manor is far happier now. One resident, who has lived in the building where two bedroom flats are sold for around £500,000, said: "It is the home to Britain's young wave of celebrities, they live here while they're young, while they're cutting their teeth in the industry. Most of them are single, when they get into relationships, they move out."

The resident added: "Walking around the place is pretty similar to being in a West End nightclub."

Indeed, one of the most famous showbiz partnerships was born at the Manor - which is affectionately called Chez Pop.

In 2004, a beautiful Geordie lass called Cheryl Tweedy caught the eye of fellow resident footballer Ashley Cole, then with Arsenal.

Cheryl, now 29, was sitting outside with bandmate and friend Nicola Roberts while Ashley, now 31, was playing tennis with his friends.The pair got chatting and less than two years later they would marry.

While dating, the couple could walk between each other's flats and avoid publicity. Girls Aloud, created through the ITV1 talent show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002, had moved in not long after 5ive had left the Manor.

Cheryl lived with Nicola, now 27, Kimberley Walsh, 30, and Nadine Coyle, 27, paired up to live together. Sarah Harding, 30, insisted she couldn't live with anyone else so had her own place.Cheryl moved out when she and Cole got their first house together a year later, the other girls followed having earned enough money to buy themselves their own bigger places.

Other footballers such as Jermain Pennant, currently playing for Championship side Wolves, also moved out, to be replaced with the younger generation of Arsenal players. Today, three of their young stars have flats there.And you can see why. The complex not only has the tennis court that matched Cheryl and Ashley. There is also a gym and swimming pool.

So, it was the obvious choice for Harry Styles and his mates to move in when they got their multi-million pound deal with Simon Cowell after appearing on the X Factor in 2010.

The boys were in their element.

Their neighbours included The Wanted, The Saturdays, their judge and friend Tulisa Contostavlos, 24, was even living there at one point.
