The real issue is about 'informed consent'.  Should society have a fixed age at which young people are considered to be able to give informed consent or should we judge it on a case by case basis?  Should it be different ages for both males and females?

It's to black and white, let's say a 17 year old boy has a girlfriend who is 16 and they are sexually active. when he turns 18 he will then be sleeping with a girl who is under 18.  The law is too rigid (as the law is) and this is where the problems come in.  I became sexually active when I was 15 and believe I had the mental and emotional maturity to make that decision.  My girlfriend was about 9 months younger than me at the time, I also believe she had the maturity to make that decision.

Case by case would be the only way to really look at it, but it's too difficult. Shit, the first nanny we had was 20 and could have passed for 14, but I've seen 17 year olds that would put a woman to shame. For me, I'm just glad I'm married and don't have to think about shit like that anymore.
