FDA Consumer Advice on Pure Powdered Caffeine
« on: September 03, 2015, 03:38:58 AM »

The FDA is warning about pure powdered caffeine being marketed directly to consumers, and recommends avoiding these products. In particular, FDA is concerned about pure powdered caffeine sold in bulk bags over the internet. The FDA is aware of at least two deaths of young men who used these products.

These products are essentially 100 percent caffeine. A single teaspoon of pure caffeine is roughly equivalent to the amount in 25 cups of coffee. Pure caffeine is a powerful stimulant and very small amounts may cause accidental overdose. Parents should be aware that these products may be attractive to young people.

Symptoms of caffeine overdose can include rapid or dangerously erratic heartbeat, seizures and death. Vomiting, diarrhea, stupor and disorientation are also symptoms of caffeine toxicity. These symptoms are likely to be much more severe than those resulting from drinking too much coffee, tea or other caffeinated beverages

On September 1, 2015, the FDA issued warning letters to five distributors of pure powdered caffeine because these products are dangerous and present a significant or unreasonable risk of illness or injury to consumers. Under existing law, including the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act passed by Congress in 1994, the FDA can take action to remove products from the market, but the agency must first establish that such products are adulterated (e.g., that the product is unsafe) or misbranded (e.g., that the labeling is false or misleading). The companies have 15 business days from the date of receipt of the letter to communicate to the agency the specific steps they will take to bring their products into compliance with the law. The agency will continue to update this page in the event additional actions are taken related to pure powdered caffeine products.

This is to advise you that in August 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reviewed the labeling for your Caffeine Anhydrous Natural Coffee Bean product and your Caffeine Powder (Synthetic Anhydrous) product, which are labeled and offered for sale as dietary supplements on your website, www.bridgecitybulk.com.  Your Caffeine Anhydrous Natural Coffee Bean product is offered in powdered form in package sizes ranging from 1 kg to 25 kg, and your Caffeine Powder (Synthetic Anhydrous) is offered in powdered form in package sizes of 10 kg and 25 kg.  The labeling of your Caffeine Anhydrous Natural Coffee Bean and Caffeine Powder (Synthetic Anhydrous) products lists the substance “Caffeine Anhydrous” as the sole ingredient.

Based on our review, we have determined that both of these products are adulterated within the meaning of section 402(f)(1)(A)(i) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act) [21 U.S.C. § 342(f)(1)(A)(i)] because they are dietary supplements that present a significant or unreasonable risk of illness or injury under the conditions of use recommended or suggested in the labeling.

Look at all the teens who are hooked on RedBull and Monster drinks.  These types of drinks should be banned for those under 18.

18 is kinda high but I agree there should be some sort of target range. But a can of pepsi has the same amount of caffeine as a red bull. So are we gonna put an age bracket for kids and drinking soda?

Should be caffeine free for kids though...
