do any of you 9-5ers have fitness-related anxiety?
« on: September 12, 2015, 06:05:05 PM »
with all the advice coming out of the health / fitness / wellness institutions about:

- stretches, exercises, etc. you MUST do to counteract the evils of prolonged sitting
- the degenerative eye effects of staring at a screen all day
- health risks of a sedentary lifestyle

etc.

does it ever get to you?  i kind of go crazy sitting at a desk all day, thinking about this stuff.

i feel like the advised solutions: stretches or exercises every half hour, forcing oneself to get up and walk around the office, pausing to stare off in the distance to prevent myopia, are all palliative at best, and possibly worthless (not to mention impractical) at worst.  but even if such measures are important, trying to separate the good advice from the bad makes my head spin.

also, i don't feel like a small amount of repetitive activities in the gym can make up for a life of sitting all day otherwise.

sorry wes, im up to 190 lbs now (worst shape of my life, probably) and the anxiety still won't going away.  i've got deeper problems than leptin deficiency...

anyway, you're one of the few who's been able to stay in good shape over the years -- do you have an active job or a desk job?

I have my own gym and I'm a victim off all that crap. Lately my clients are in better shape than I am.

Training before you start your work day may help ease your stress...

Yes.
Some sports before actual work and the whole day is different.

I don't regard it as "sports" per se, but I train with weights almost every day before work. Early morning is the only time I don't feel that my training is robbing some ther part of my life (dad, husband, employee).

I can imagine you getting up extra early to go train. Your wife reaches for you as you sit up in bed, but you're gone even though you're still in the room. She gives you the look of "stay and fuck my brains out then cuddle" but she knows it's to no avail, the iron is calling and you want to, no, need to answer it.

I've trained before, after, and both before and after work.

Honestly, I am not a "morning person".  I feel like absolute shit in the morning, and many times have DRASTICALLY more energy in the evening.  That said, I noticed that when I workout in the morning, it can sort of "cure" my bad feelings.  Furthermore, when I work out in the evenings, I'm often disappointed as I don't feel the workout goes any better than my morning workouts.  Despite having more energy before to begin, the workout isn't really any better.

Hence, I usually try to workout in the morning.  However, just motivating myself to fight through the depressing "morning feelings" and get to the gym requires a tremendous amount of energy and generates a lot of stress for me, even the night before.  Thus I feel it's sort of a wash...  I actually think the ideal time to for me to workout is sort of in the middle of the day.  Another conflict with work life, sadly...

So much truth there. Especially the part where I look like Frank McGrath.

Yes, Cephissus has some serious issues. When he used to post all of his food stuff, I though he was some beast.

Then he posts a picture and it looks like he is starving.  :-\

Yeah, but it's not the photos.

I feel you. Gaining 25 lbs in a short amount of time is what's making you look like shit (even compared to other times you were at that bodyweight). I have also experienced this, although it was only 10 lbs (looks like 20 lbs in terms of definition, but 10 in terms of size lol). You are likely bloated as fuck. Eating a ton of junk food and doing those eating contests won't make you feel better. You should just eat normal, don't control everything and don't count calories, just eat what you like and balance it with healthy, nutritious foods and you'll feel great. Eat until you are satisfied and try not to do long fasts to avoid binging again. Just eating in a balanced way and enough will make you feel better and stronger at the gym. You don't need to bulk to get these benefits.

A strict diet can certainly leave a sort of trauma in your mind that doesn't go away for months, until you can finally eat normall without overthinking and it comes by instinct. You mentioned having anxiety issues (so do I), so try to avoid eating when anxious or to feel better.

Don't worry about being too sedentary the rest of the day. Just try to find balance in your life and if your job doesn't make you feel good about yourself, then look for another one if possible.
