The other day I tried to figure out what the "IFBB pro league" was. I was unable to do so.  Is it a non-profit entity? who owns its? does it have a constitution and so on...The way it operates is like a private corporation so I assume that's what it is. Like the WWE which is a theatrical production where the outcome of the events are scripted but the audience doesn't care.

Hopefully someone can assist and clarify this matter!  8)

They ought to mark down points for the distended guts, and also for out of proportion bodyparts.

Posing correctly should be a prerequisite also, and start scoring calves or lack thereof.

Maybe weight classes are needed to keep the competitors sane looking instead of looking like bloated oompa loompas.

Will the Arnold overtake the Olympia as bodybuilding's premier contest?

Kai is not really MIA. He's going to compete.

It all comes down to the judges. They let it get out of hand by rewarding the likes of Jay Cutler, Branch Warren, etc.

There was no need for a new "Classic" bodybuilding grouping, the judges should have never strayed from the original judging criteria. It's bad when the Teenage Mutant Hebrew Turtle, Dexter, is consider aesthetic on the Olympia stage... :-X

Best post.

Jay is popular now but he wasn't charismatic and he didn't look good as Mr Olympia. Phil has charisma but needs to get it together and stop the nonsense on social media.

Nobody goes to the Olympia for bikini or mpd. Women's physique and figure are interesting. I bet classic physique will end up being Very popular but we shouldn't have to even have a division they is what bodybuilding is supposed to look like

They let it get out of hand with Coleman.

When Jay almost beat him, it instantly became bigger bigger bigger and everyone just fell over for the mass.

The same thing happened regarding FBB when they started letting the biggest female win the show.

It's always been the judges fault... ALWAYS.

People only put on the size and sculpt what gets awarded. Otherwise, they would not bother.

It does seem that people can get placed favorably, due to connections in the industry, rather then  soley based on the quality of the physique they bring to the stage.

I think that decades ago, people still bought into the myths propagated by schmoe Weider and the supplement companys, that bodybuilding was about healthy living and hard training. Guys were led to believe that if they followed the same weights routines and consumed all the crap sold in stores, that they could look like a bodybuilder too; without the pathological lying, insane amounts of drug abuse and risking your life all for the sake of "defeating" another man in a male beauty pageant.

Let's be honest, No matter how many fist pumps, pained expression's and "war cry's" that Branch Warren makes,
He's always going to be an angry, insecure elf, that's standing on a stage in nothing but a sparkly thong, performing a choreographed set of moves in front of a crowd of salivating, predominantly homosexual men; as are all the others. Nobody want's to shame their families like that any more.

Nowadays, anyone with any genetic gifts will usually go down the route of taking part in a real sport and aim to make a decent living. Pro bodybuilding is dying fucking stupid!

LMAO this post deserves a plastic trophy :D, I read it twice and it gave me weird feeling of happiness

Good thread topic and post by Shizzo! :D

Like 'em or not, Ben and Joe Weider were 100% bodybuilding.
A few years ago, Weider sold his publishing business and rights to the Olympia contest for 300 million to AMI- CEO David Pecker.
Mr Pecker * (* I couldn't make this name up) made his millions in the gossip magazine industry most famously with " The National Enquirer" . Thus, David Pecker's roots are NOT in bodybuilding .
With the final passing of Ben and Joe due to old age, a new era pro bodybuilding has begun.
Gone are the days of serious , classic physiques and posing like Arnold and the pumping iron gang.
Gone are the Lee Haney's and new age freaks like Dorian Yates.
Sure, we have a few muscle freaks left like Phil, Kai and big Rammy, but it just seems different now.

The IFBB and NPC are now dominated by the female bikini division in the biggest contests.
The NPC national pro qualifiers have aprox 500 bikini, 100 figure, 100-200 MPD, 50 WPD and 100-150 male bodybuilders entered in the show. Thus, at least 80% of the official entrants are NOT bodybuilders.

Make no mistake that the negative image of steroids and extreme muscle mass plays into this .
NBC-sn had made an initial agreement to broadcast the 50th Olympia last years and even showed up with a full production crew to cover the event. For reasons unclear to me, NBC-sn never aired the contest and those who work in the industry said little/nothing about it? Hmmmmmm?

Now we learn that Flex on line will have a webcast of this years Olympia.
Considering that AMI is the publishing company of Flex , Muscle & Fitness and owns the rights for the Olympia, this is no surprise to me. I'm grateful it was picked up by the promoting company as I'll get to watch it on the webcast.

Ok , so here's my 2 cents on the OP thread topic. Hardcore men's bodybuilding is the "mall anchor store" for the IFBB and NPC contest promotion industry. This is why the prize $$ for Mr O is a LOT more then  what Ms bikini gets.
David Pecker and the AMI insiders know this despite all the negative image with hardcore bodybuilders.
I suspect AMI would love to do a reality TV format with a fitness body twist. MPD and bikini are custom made for this , but that doesn't line up with majority of the IFBB's most ardent fans.

I suspect AMI will begin to launch some sex gossip, eye candy , romance scandals revolving around the top bikini contestants and tie in the more popular MPD guys for various products promotions????
They can  leave the pro men's BB as is and hope to fabricate more drama between the top pros like Phil and Kai.

Sadly, the last thing I expect to see is a move promoting serious, hardcore bodybuilding as a legit sport.
I hope and pray I'm wrong... :'(

excellent comment

another thing to consider regarding the steroid issue is that we've had to deal with decades of draconian legal shenanigans. Bodybuilders didn't get a break under the democrats since the US vice president has a pet peeve with steroids! Biden is considered the architect of the 1990 and 2004 steroids control act that harshly criminalized possession.

It's not just a stigma , in fact it's been getting progressively more illegal to be a bodybuilder since the 1990's.

THANKS OBAMA!

Howard, the Weider's ran the sport of bodybuilding, the bodybuilding mags, the contests, the judges, and the supplement industry like a communist country. If you didn't do what they said or competed in another Org, they would go to the end of the earth to ruin your career.

But the Weiders didn't have to contend with the Internet.

Now every bodybuilder has access to social media and exposure to the public.

And the public has realized they're drug addicted, lying, narcissistic idiots with nothing to add to society. And with that.....the interest in the sport is dying.

The information age has lifted the aura and allure of competitive bodybuilding. People have now been exposed to the harsh realities, and most realize the risk vs reward is too great.

It is certainly reeling. Not exactly a great summer for the bodybuilding industry as a whole:

*Gary Udit $1,500 press pass tariff for his NPC shows
*IFBB Europa limiting media - unless they paid for a title sponsorship, that is.
*Kai - easily the most popular pro in the circuit - likely sitting out the Olympia
*DLB, the most popular female pro, also not competing
*Ultimate Nutrition pays over 625,000 for exclusive title sponsorship for the O and now are suing the promoters for bringing other companies in for prominent sponsor positioning

And this doesn't include the usual complaints that have been consistent for years.

Bodybuilding has always been a niche following to begin with, but with Kai seemingly M.I.A., an uncharismatic reigning champion, and a thin talent pool in the pro ranks, have we seen the final nail in the coffin?

Will there even be a Mr. Olympia contest (as we know it now) in 5 years?

Will the Arnold overtake the Olympia as bodybuilding's premier contest?

The Olympia is still THE show and the men's bodybuilding is still THE premiere event. I don't see that changing. People aren't flying out to Vegas for bikini or physique

I see phil competing for at least another year or two. The category is in transition and maybe with guys retiring some of these up and comers can make the mark

Is that why there are like 200 competitors in those categories?  ???
