I remember buying that
IronMan mag off the store shelf in 1989. Just before me and a friend went in to see a movie. So we're sitting there waiting for the film to begin and I'm skimming through the issue. I start reading the Paris article intro and am like,
Holy crap! Bob's gay!
Was a bit of a shock to a reasonably naive 19 year old, but
after that initial shock, I didn't much care, and I certainly do not now.
Fact is, Bob, as another says, is an intelligent, thoughtful and measured man who achieved one of bodybuilding's greatest-ever physiques. And he didn't let the industry or drugs ruin him, either. Nor did he stick around and become embarrassing by pushing fart powder and other nonsense.
There's no question the powers-that-be pushed him out as a competitor, bit by bit.
It's cool to hear he's now living here in Canada and enjoying what I hope is a great marriage.
I wish Mr. Paris all the best.
P.S. Bob kennedy told me that, in his prime, in a tank top, in the gym, NO ONE looked bigger (despite him being considered a shape guy, Bob said he was reasonably tall, very handsome and had impressive musculature) or better than Bob Paris. Said he was strong, too. He had seen him squatting 500 pounds for multiple sets.
