Btw, Ronnie... this should give you and your wife a little consolation, if that could even help.  Almost no one could have recognized the threat.

Right now, I'm sure you're thinking what to say to the kids.  If you get another dog before they come home, then carefully explain what happened (without getting into the physical details that can only make their shock worse), then their sadness will by divided against caring for their new friend.  Their hearts will effectively force them to do it.

Just make sure they understand you're not "replacing" the friend they've come to know, and that nothing could ever replace her.

As they get older, they'll competely understand why you chose to do that.
We have another dog and we will not replace her. She like all dogs are unique and special. Our daughters are teenagers and my oldest "whose dog it is" is a true animal lover. On top of it she is quite emotional and I know she is going to be a whirlwind of emotion. She has dealt with death before and takes it hard. Thanks for your thoughts L.V.

We just lost our 1 1/2 year old Dachshund. She died on our kitchen floor while seizing and convulsing from Bufo toad toxins. Tried to wash her mouth out but it went to her heart and nervous system. My daughters are in school and don't even know yet. She was sheer joy and happiness. All of you pet owners especially dog lovers can imagine how I feel.  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Ah, man, you and your family have my sincerest condolences. Losing a beloved animal is an absolute nightmare.

And btw, I did see where you said you have another dog, so I know that sort of helps the situation.  Another soul will be missing her, no doubt about it.

Sorry to hear man, i know the feeling of losing a furry family member. The worst.
Look at it this way, now u can save another life by going to the shelter and adopting a new dog that needs a loving home. Hundreds of neglected animals in your town.

Thanks man. We have an 8yr old Beagle and Dachshund mix we adopted years ago. She will get all of the attention for now. Maybe after the grieving is over is  we will adopt another one.

No, with younger kids you can sometimes sidetrack them from being overwhelmed with the loss.. but it could backfire with his teenager, because it would require an explanation (one that she wouldn't want to hear at that moment).

He knows what he's doing.

Seriously?  How the fuck do you think they took it?  Why the fuck did you ask that?  Were you hoping he would say, "They were elated!"   ???

I didn't mean any harm with those comments. I was just trying to give him an outlet.

RONNIE, I've had a few best friends (the human kind) like a lot of other GetBiggerds;but none have ever come as close as the loyalty and love my dogs have given me throughout my lifetime.

A loving dog becomes a part of the family and is definitely a bundle of love in a furry package.

We have two such packages at present and we all do our best to give them the best living environment possible.

I'm sure that you and your family feel likewise and have been doing the same ... so  I offer my condolences on the demise of your family pet.

Here is a poem that I have found most moving which might be appropriate to send to you today.

It may not fit the occasion but it says a lot regarding little critters that we too often take for granted.

Great to see that most GetBiggrers love these little critters too.

Dog's Death by John Updike  (1932 - 2009)

She must have been kicked unseen or brushed by a car.
Too young to know much, she was beginning to learn
To use the newspapers spread on the kitchen floor
And to win, wetting there, the words, "Good dog! Good dog!"

We thought her shy malaise was a shot reaction.
The autopsy disclosed a rupture in her liver.
As we teased her with play, blood was filling her skin
And her heart was learning to lie down forever.

Monday morning, as the children were noisily fed
And sent to school, she crawled beneath the youngest's bed.
We found her twisted and limp but still alive.
In the car to the vet's, on my lap, she tried

To bite my hand and died. I stroked her warm fur
And my wife called in a voice imperious with tears.
Though surrounded by love that would have upheld her,
Nevertheless she sank and, stiffening, disappeared.

Back home, we found that in the night her frame,
Drawing near to dissolution, had endured the shame
Of diarrhoea and had dragged across the floor
To a newspaper carelessly left there.

Good dog.

PIP: Dog was a true getbigger, didn't want to miss its anabolic window, toad was the only protein in sight.

This is very funny, yet not offensive.  Well played.

Lots of crying to be expected, under the circumstances pretty good. It's gonna be rough the next few days, but we will get through it.
