Question for Getbiggers with children.
« on: September 29, 2015, 08:41:08 AM »
When teaching your adolescent children that honesty , hard work and integrity always prevail is it difficult knowing that odds are at many points in his life he will see this is not the case and how do you go about explaining this to him without compromising those values?

Do you want your children to be successful and rich?  if so then being honest won't help.

Why would you lie to your child?

The concept of using the term "always" is flawed from the start.

You need to set expectations - there's nothing wrong with saying the math suggests long term success following those principles, but there's always going to be exceptions that they need to be able to cope with.

If that's too complicated, below is a quick summary of what I'm trying to say:

???

Honesty, integrity, hard work pays off in more ways than one

Are you talking about money being the success part?

I'd rather them be happy than rich unhappy scumbags.

thats why the god and hell / afterlife stories were invented. You see, many scumbags on this planet live amazing lives while good people suffer, the only explanation is some afterlife punishment for the scumbag and heaven for the good man.

People who steal successfully have done less work for more profit.  Any child/ any adult can see this.  I'd take another tack.  It's not a question of work vs payoff.

There are lots and lots of people who make their way in the world by lying, cheating, playing politics, smooching their boss' ass, stepping on others, etc.  They live in a world where they get lied to, cheated on, played, and trodden on, and they live in a state of fear because their means of making a living could easily disappear based on the perception and whimsy of their superiors.

There are other people who have worked hard to become exceptionally good at what they do.  They don't have to lie and cheat in order to get by because their skills are in demand.  They don't live in fear and are not surrounded by scheming, miserable people.  They live much happier lives.

So that's what you should tell your son.  I don't have any children btw.  I'm just incredibly wise.

I always quote Mr. Burns:

FAITH...FAMILY...FRIENDS

THESE are the demons you must exorcise if you want to succeed in the business world.

If I ever have a kid, I'd prefer a girl (with a beautiful woman). Only thing I'd have to teach her is how to choose a right man (and avoid wrong). Boy... well... I'd have to teach him some ugly stuff...

Do the best you can. Either way in this terrible generation of people... they'll have to learn the harder way if  you try to conceal them from the realistic expectations of corporate society and such. Just make sure they have a positive attitude and open mind and whatever path they decide to go down they will be able to take those two things with them...Consistency and perseverance is also important

Hard work always pays off in the future but laziness pays off now.
