For the same reason why people slow down at the scene of a car accident, in hopes of getting a glimpse at a dead body or an injured person.

I am sure this thought process can be explained by an evolutionary process.  Maybe looking at destruction and chaos helps us value the safety of our own lives and the people we care about, i.e., it reminds us to always stay on guard.  Thousands of years ago our ancestors were continuously reminded of the dangerous environments they encountered.

I am just speaking out my ass.

Could it just be the curiosity (and taboo) of seeing something so foreign to everyday experience? Imagine cops, firefighters, coroners, etc. are probably immune to such impulses.

Sorry, but outside of the third world and war zones, no developed country has anything remotely comparable to what the USA has in mass shootings.

USA and Brazil (which is a developing country) are the only countries where you constantly hear about mass shootings. USA moreso cos 1 American = 5 developing world lives, 25 3rd world lives and 100 middle eastern lives. I'm not being a prick there, every country is ethnocentric - I'm sure 100 people died in bombs in Iraq or Syria today but it stops being newsworthy when 250,000 people with names you can't pronounce die in the same area.

Shooter reportedly asked victims to identify their religion beforehand. Muz wouldn't care, I'd suspect, or would just assume. And their beef ain't really a religious one, anyway. Likewise, the Columbine/Virginia Tech/Santa Barbara 'no one likes me'-type doesn't usually seem concerned with anyone's God either.

I actually like the USA's freedom to own guns. Switzerland has similar gun ownership numbers but only a fraction of such incidents (taking account of population). USA has bears, hunting and actual wilderness - something we don't have so it is bullshit when someone from Ireland, England etc compares the countries as equal.

So, in conclusion, I don't know what the fuck to do. Every country has jilted loners, people seeking infamy and assholes. You also can't uninvent the gun no more than we can live in a world without nuclear weapons again. I'd suggest getting a better health system to try and treat/spot mental illness but you can't lock everyone with mental illness up or legislate for someone flipping.
