Study supports cancer link with height
« on: October 01, 2015, 09:35:03 PM »
Short read: Its results suggested that for every 10cm (4in) of height, when fully grown, the risk of developing cancer increased by 18% in women and 11% in men.

Long read:
A Swedish study of five million people appears to support the theory that height and cancer risk are linked.

The study found that taller people had a higher risk of breast cancer and skin cancer, among other cancers.

Its results suggested that for every 10cm (4in) of height, when fully grown, the risk of developing cancer increased by 18% in women and 11% in men.

But experts said the study did not take into account many risk factors - and that tall people should not be worried.

Previous studies have shown a link, although why it exists is not known.

To reduce risk of cancer, the most important things to do are:

    give up smoking
    cut down on alcohol
adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle

In a preliminary report of the study, presented at the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology conference, researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm describe how they tracked a large group of Swedish adults for more than 50 years.

Taller women had a 20% greater risk of developing breast cancer, they said, while taller men and women increased their risk of skin cancer (or melanoma) by 30%.

This study's early findings are very similar in size to those found by other studies.

Dr Emelie Benyi, who led the study, said the results could help to identify risk factors that could lead to the development of treatments.

But she added: "As the cause of cancer is multi-factorial, it is difficult to predict what impact our results have on cancer risk at the individual level."

Although it is clear that adult height is not a cause of cancer, it is thought to be a marker for other factors related to childhood growth.

Scientists say taller people have more growth factors, which could encourage cancer development, they have more cells in their body because of their size, which increases the risk of one of them turning cancerous, and a higher food intake, which also makes them more at risk of cancer.

Prof Dorothy Bennett, head of the molecular cell sciences research centre, St George's, University of London, said it was "very plausible" that the risk of cancer in a person should be related to the number of cells in their body

"A cancer arises by mutations from a single normal cell. Bigger people have more cells (not bigger cells)," she said.

"So melanoma risk, for example, might be expected to increase with surface area (amount of skin), which is related to the square of height."

Sarah Williams, health information manager at Cancer Research UK, said the study did not take into account factors such as smoking or whether women went for breast screening.

She added: "Whatever your height, there are lots of things you can do to reduce the risk of cancer - not smoking, cutting down on alcohol, eating healthily, being active, having a healthy weight and enjoying the sun safely can each help you stack the odds against the disease."

This isn't anything new.  Look around.  Do you see an abundance of tall, 70, 80 or 90 year olds?

humans shrink some people who were 6'4 at 45 are 5'10 at 75

I personally think the study was done by a short guy that got rejected by many chicks in favor of taller men

Next up, bald men live longer

And then, men with tiny dicks are richer

If you live long enough cancer will get you in the end, doesnt matter how tall you are.

Not a given. Some people are pretty much immune to cancer.

Getting cancer isn't a choice. Being tall is.

I was literally thinking about this as I was brushing my teeth this morning. That being tall, while being cool, will most likely shorten my lifespan. It seems short people live longer and have more energy. Maybe it comes from the burden of carrying extra weight. Like how a Great Dane average life expectancy is 7 years, a Yorkie is about twice that.

They've done studies and found that on average, short people live longer than tall people.

But interestingly enough, go into any old folks home, and all the old people are short. I mean, sure old people shrink some, but if youre 6'1", youre not going to shrink to 5'6".

Did you link cancer with height just by looking around?  ::)

The problem is with the Great Dane and Yorkie analogy is that dogs are man made genetic mutants in a sense. There is no use in nature for a Great Dane---spindly legs, tall, hip problems. The breed has a host of genetic problems that would keep it's lifespan short. Even though some Timber Wolves and Artic Wolves can weigh just as much as a Great Dane, but will outlive it.

It's probably a combination of two things:

a) People are getting taller across generations (adequate nutrition, etc).
b) People's spines shrink and curve as they grow older.

The reason we don't see a lot of tall people when they are really old is because people shrink. If your 5'10 at 30 years old if you live to be 80, you'll probably end up in the 5'6 range by that time depending on how much you fucked up your body along the way...Some are saying Hulk Hogan may not even be 6'0 feet today...So that means that if Lee Priest lives to be 80 for some weird reason that his organs don't blow up in the next few years, he'll probably be around 4'3 on his death bed. Shrinking about 5 inches from what he is today(4'7 1/2)... :D
