All these ads for Draftkings or Fan duel, just gambling?
« on: October 03, 2015, 07:02:40 PM »
Can some Thunderdomer please enlighten me on these ads for sites like Draftkings or Fanduel or the like that keep running on football programs?  Are these just thinly veiled gambling for fantasy football?  Are they scam lottery sites for the foolish?

How is something like this not illegal gambling?  Has the law just not caught up yet, like it seems to have done with Internet poker?

yes it is nothing but online gambling, legal because of a loophole which will probably be filled shortly.

"A frequent question people looking in to daily fantasy sports sites have is, “Is DraftKings a scam?” They ask this because they know that gambling online is illegal, yet this site claims to offer real money prizes betting on fantasy sports. The truth is, the site is 100% legit and 100% legal (except for residents of Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana, Washington, and Quebec due to state-specific laws).

Due to a loophole in the 2006 law that made online gambling illegal, this and other daily fantasy sports sites are able to pay out real money.

The law that made online gambling illegal, 2006’s Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, explicitly carved out an exemption for fantasy sports online. This was done because millions of Americans use websites to run their season-long fantasy leagues.

Since money is often wagered on this, suddenly millions of people would find themselves on the wrong side of the law. In order to prevent this, fantasy sports were exempted from these rules.

These same rules apply to daily fantasy sports. The only difference between season long fantasy sports and daily fantasy sports is the length of a particular game."

so the law was meant to protect season long fantasy football, but also allows daily fantasy football wagering.  that will change shortly I'm sure

Thanks for the info Tim.  I listen to a podcast where Drsftkings advertises heavily.  Most other advertisers on the podcast are somewhere between shady and scam.

Just remember the only one making any money are the people running the site

I read two plus two forums a lot and based on info there I'd be surprised if Draft Kings etc lasts one more year. Gonna be just like Black Friday with online poker.

It's not really gambling because there's a high skill factor. For example, if you pick Eli Manning in addition to being an idiot you're totally relying on luck because he only has about 5 decent games out of 16 each season and that would be gambling. But if you pick Peyton Manning you're relying on his statistical proficiency and consistency that will prove fruitful in about 12 out of 16 games so its not gambling. Go with Matt Forte this Sunday.

Online gambling is illegal, but theres some stupid loophole or something that I'm sure will be fixed soon. They are trying to cash out quick before they get shut down like how Blackstone Labs is trying to sell all there SARMs with these huge blowout sales as of recent before the FDA cracks down on SARM's.

The guys behind Draft Kings aren't as stupid and belligerent as the poker jokers. They're already greasing the palms of congressmen left and right to keep their cash cow pumping. Making billions each week plenty to go around.

They bring below average joes to do the commercials so they can say "If i can do it, you can do it!" It's so easy to instill confidence into the 2015 public that this terrible method works....

The government can fuck right off with its regulation, but on a personal note, Draft Kings' engineering team is in Boston, and if they get shut down, I am going on raid that place for talent like Ghengis Khan.

We have a bookies on every street corner, there's 4 at our local shopping centre, I've never been to the states, do you not have similar?

Because the US government loves to make things illegal. It's part of their overall goal to make every man, woman, and child a felon for control purposes.

Apart from guns.

Back to all the restrictions on gambling, what is the actual rationale for it?  Is it just a moral majority issue?

Regarding online gambling, quasi steroid supplements and other grey area type shit, I had a friend back during the mid 90s who had this theory about the Clinton administration not really enforcing what had been the regular standards for pornography in magazines like Penthouse and Hustler.  He said that starting in the mid 90s they just didn't give a shit anymore like they used to about stuff like close up full spread vagina or penetration or pictures of chicks pissing, things that used to bring some scrutiny.  I think he claimed it had something to do with NAFTA somehow.  And it got worse as we got deeper into the administration and closer to its end.

Anyway, I doubt any laws are getting passed policing any standards towards the end of  this current regime and frankly think it will be open season on all types of grey market activities like it was towards the end of the Clinton era.

The only difference is that online gambling has Big Vegas and Big Gambling greasing palms to get it banned, so that might change something.

The so-called "moral majority" has about as much legislative power as my cat. The rationale is very, very simple: control. More laws mean more levers to control the people. It's really not all that difficult.

It's not evil unless the state doesn't make the lion's share of the take, as do they with lotteries.

I hate how now it seems they sponsor the FXX show "The League". Too much product placement in shows nowadays.

Pressure from big casino owners to stop it because they were losing money. Also a lot of the poker sites were complete scams. Now after pushing the gov to make online gambling illegal.  The big casinos are pushing to legalize it again. Funny thing is some online poker and slot machine games on Facebook makes hundreds of millions a year even though they don't pay anything out.

I'm conflicted about Uber.  I dislike it's blatant rule breaking, but I like it disrupting old dysfunctional networks  sticking it to the man.

The man is allowing it to happen, though, and that says it all.

A global power scheme marches into one city after the next, and meets very little resistance.  Not good.

They're cheaper. And, it's all done by app on your phone. I send for a car and know exactly when it's coming and what the person picking me up looks like. Can't do that with a cab.
