Big Jim Forsythe passed away. Canadian arm-wrestling champion 1970.

I was notified by weightlifter Paul Bjarnason that Jim passed away a few days ago. He was almost 75. He beat me in the final of the Canadian Arm-wrestling championship in 1970.

It was staged during the Mr Canada contest.

Jim worked as a manager in a couple of Ray Beck's Western Gyms in Vancouver. Big Jim was a funny guy and would crack jokes all the time. Talked fast, too.

He delighted people when he flexed his pecs. Went something like this, left right, left right, left left, right right, together together together!

I caught up with Jim and Hans Gensow in August 2004 in Vancouver.

Here is a shot of Jim and me in Vancouver about 10 years ago. I didn't know he suffered from colon cancer. He dealt with that disease for 10 years.

He told me that he was going to sell furniture when he got old. Turns out he was a union rep so he got a soft job in the end. Smart guy, Jimmy.

Here is a shot of Jim and me in the finals of the arm-wrestling. Not many guys showed up for the event. We laughed afterwards about where the big lumberjacks were from Quebec?

I gave him the Neil Lewis arm wrestling training table I was given when I left Canada in January 1971.

You can see that Jim cleverly but the table leg between his legs to give himself more leverage. People shouted about it from the audience. In the end I was happy that Jim won. A great

mate. Two weeks before the contest when I weighed 210 I beat him easily. I weighed 190 that night. Jim weighed 240 pounds.

Jim said he couldn't hear the protests from the audience because he was deaf in his right ear. I told him that it was his

left ear that was facing the crowd!

We got out the old photo and had a good laugh about that contest. We never did have another arm wrestle! I tore a biceps so couldn't do it any more with my right hand.

I visited Jim after the contest and didn't remember this photo being taken. I took a photo of it from his photo album.

Here is Jim with Hans Gensow. Hans was from Germany and looked like a Greek Adonis. He was the guy who got me interested in bodybuilding in Kamloops. I was impressed

with his physique at Riverside Park where he and Udo Froelich dived off the top of the railway bridge. Both were big muscular guys and everyone was impressed. Udo wrestled

as a professional in Vancouver as Eric Froelich. He ended up with bad knees and hips and needed a hip replacement when I talked to him in 2000. Hans still looked good at 75

ten years ago!

Jim was never the bodybuilder. He looked more like a wrestler but he trained with us at the gym and was a popular bloke there.

Jim lived in an apartment with his wife, Brenda. When they joined us for dinner one night he delighted in posing for this photo sitting in Heather's Mercedes. What a car that was.
