The loudness, cacophony and visual overload can seriously cover clams, garbage playing and less-than-optimum singing.

Over 40 years of music and live performances has clued me in to this phenomenon.

Same here man. Seen so many shows its retarded. And you're right, live,  the insane volume buries alot of of what would be considered shitty performances when listened to again in a raw live recording.

But some truly awful shows can sound shit no.matter the volume. Again,, they sounded great that night. Megadeth destroyed. Played a lot of songs off so far so good so what including Hook In Mouth. One of my faves. I dont think, Rust In Piece was out yet so I cant remember whi was playing lead.

I like the acoustic intro and there are parts that are heavy but the chromatic riffs just don't sound good to my ear, the solo is pretty cool but it isn't a Disposable Heros or Master.
Like you said, all a matter of tastes and personal preferences. 

Saw Suicidal Tendencies for the Lights Camera Revelolution tour with Exodus. That was their best line up.Suicidal destroyed. Fucking show is easily in my top 3. The energy,  the thrashing, the songs, everything was fucking perfect. It qas the peak.of thrash, when people knew how to work the pit without being fucking morons  They killed.it.
