I am no fan of taxation, but how is getting $88MM for a $1 investment "ripped off?"

Because whether you paid 1 dollar or 1 penny, you still honestly won the money. No reason why you should pay that much in taxes. You're getting ripped off in the sense that someone else is most likely filling their pockets with the money that you won fairly. This is not just, no matter how much you paid for the ticket.

It's taxed as ordinary income. Look, if it bothers you so much, stop voting for Socialists/Democrats. I would rather see lottery winnings taxed at 99.9% than somebody's actual hard work taxed at 50%.

Welcome to the world on non-participatory democracy. Where Americans don't vote, but complain a lot.

Fine, you don't vote. Then your opinion on this matter is simply uninformed and ignorant.

So then basically voting does nothing other than give you the "right" to complain.

So, your part in all of this is simply to complain about the perceived "injustices" of the taxation of lottery winnings on a bodybuilding message board? Fine, elections increasingly don't matter, and as soon as your democrat friends finish importing 30 million voters/leeches, it really won't matter.

At least participate in the revolution. If not that, what purpose do you serve? A buffed gas bag emitting strange sounds?

X2. Our votes mean absolutely nothing. Big Brother has convinced people like AJ that they are doing their part as great Americans by voting and changing things haha lol.

If someone really wants to change something, it takes a lot more than casting a silly vote.

You win 188 million and pay 100 million on taxes. Freaking ridiculous. People getting ripped off by the powers that be.

Anyway, she will wind up broke, as her drug-dealing boyfriend will probably piss all her money away.
who told you that?
In the UK if you win 5 million on the lottery you get five million, winnings are not taxed the stake money is normally taxed.

Same with betting on horses, you either pay tax on your stake or pay tax on your winnings, choice is yours.

Its taxes from the state run lottery. I gues you think schools, roads, waste management, sewage, parks etc are all free.

I read somewhere that in America that there could be upwards of 100,000 people who make their living gambling in some form or another...Although the odds in big Jackpots like Powerball and Megabucks are astronomical, when you buy a ticket, you are making a wager. It's a gamble and should be taxed the same as any other gambling winnings. If more of these people who won massive lotteries looked at it as earned income(which it is in the eyes of the IRS/Feds), they may think twice before giving millions away in snake oil type charities, scumbag relatives and so called friends. If you win 20 million playing Powerball or 20 million in Vegas sports betting, treat the winnings exactly the same. Again, the Feds do. And don't ever feel guilty about winning any amount of money you put a wager on. Regardless of the size of the jackpot...

Whether it is the lottery, jeopardy or a poker game, winnings are taxed. You don't have to like it, nobody cares whether you do or don't. BTW keep all the receipts from what you spent getting to that winning ticket, it's tax deductible.

What a Jackpot Costs

If you won a $200 million jackpot, you could owe millions in taxes. Assuming that you didn't make any money working and don't have any deductions, you can subtract the $6,200 standard deduction from your winnings for a total income of $199,993,800. Your first $406,750 of income gets hit with a total tax of $118,188.75. The remaining $199,587,050 gets taxed at 39.6 percent. Combining the $118,188.75 with the $79,036,471.80 gives you a total federal tax bill of $79,154,660.55. However, only $50 million would have been withheld, leaving you to write a check for $29,154,660.55.
