As a veteran of the Navy and the Army, my advice is for him to go Air Force. He can use the training/certs he gets on air frames in the civilian world, whereas after the Coast Guard he won't be able to use those skills as a civvy.

Yeah but Air Force is the for the brainy types.

He graduated HS with a 3.4 and currently has a 3.8. Not exactly UCLA numbers but not that bad. I'm not 100% against it (Coast Guard) but I want him to finish his degree then make a decision. I get the kid is just trying to find himself but his direction is scaring the hell out of me.

Will he enter an officer program? I worked with execs from all academies and was heavily recruited by one Biotech company that hired a lot JMO"S. I was hired as VP sales and all my field managers were academy grads.

Officers are viewed as leaders in the business world.

He's looking into the academy program as we speak. But what an outstanding point you pointed out about officers being leaders in the business world.

Nothing wrong at all, LOTS of jobs he can have afterwards in search and rescue, New York Police Harbor Patrol, etc...
All good pay & benefits.

Props to him for it.   I'm assuming (I dont know much about it) he will stay in the USA, avoid the other side of the world?

He'll set himself up in life, just remind him to stay on track and avoid doing the dumb shit that dumb people do.  Stay so busy with service, work and learning there is no time for bar fights, hookers, etc.

Honorable.  You should be proud!

my brother went through the air force as an officer.  in accordance with what others have suggested, he has a leadership position in a big company, and makes lots of money.

if the work is dangerous, he may become a wolf amongst sheep in the corporate world someday.  most people (especially in, for example, technology) are very cowardly.  they're afraid of getting yelled at by their boss, lol.  when someone has seen people die, killed people, or simply been in combat, they may very well rise through the ranks.  of course, they may also become traumatized.  depends on their nature, i suppose.

Seeing as he's your son, is he tall enough? ;D

But seriously: he would be saving lives and doing truly useful and fulfilling work as a coast guard, or flopping around on a pitch in pretend agony working as a football player. Plus he's not going to be the next Messi, because then he'd already be famous by now.

+1 on Walter White's point about military officers. I would also expand that to NCOs also.

(full disclosure, I was an E5)

Coast guard is a solid career choice IMO. It will come down to what he makes of it...

Doesn't sound like he's CGA material. It's not one of the Big 3 but still highly competitive. Graduating from one of the academies is a relatively big deal though this isn't the 1950s anymore and military service isn't thought to matter like it once was. On the other hand, run of the mill retired military officers are a dime a dozen in the workplace. There's nothing special about them. Most are mediocrities with questionable work ethics. They're not used to the 60-100 work weeks people put in now. Military work is government work after all. In fact, there's a glut of them with the military downsizing and trying to get rid of the ones it doesn't want to keep, which is most of them. Your kid would be better off dropping football and making sure he graduates from junior college with a 4.0 so he can get into a top college. In today's global economy there are no do-overs.

And your average citizen is used to a 60-100 work week? Please... no one has a work ethic anymore.

I think coach is referring to the University of Kentucky for American football.

Not everything is about the United Kingdom, people  ;)

Coach, is it a full ride scholarship offer to Kentucky?

That sounds like a sweet deal too. Not many people can say they played Div 1 college football, plus he would get his school ing paid for.

He could always join the Coast Guard after he graduates, if that is what he wants to do.

He didn't say scholarship.....he said "offer".

In other words, "walk on and try to make the 125 man roster".

Keep in mind this is Coach, so only about 1/4 of what is posted is accurate.
