Why don't D1 schools offer partial scholarships? What is the rationale behind this?

Because they would have a huge competitive disadvantage in recruiting. FBS schools are limited to 85 football scholarships at any one time. The rules state that a student receiving partial scholarship counts fully against the total of 85. Therefore, if every other program is offering 85 full scholarships and you're offering 75 full and 10 partial scholarships, you're not going to get as good of players. No highly touted recruit would accept a partial if they can go to another school and get a full. Now lower tier sports like baseball, swimming, etc. do give some partial scholarships....but for football, it would only be FCS, Div II, and Div III schools doing this.

So, I guess out of those 85, they want the best of the best.

Because I was thinking that if a student can't get a full scholarship, they would surely take a partial scholarship. Better than nothing. However, if you're that good, I am assuming that most schools would offer you a full scholarship anyway.

You might see that if partial scholarships didn't count against the 85 scholarship limit. I don't think there is any rule preventing an fbs program from offering a partial scholarship but the coach and recruiting director would be crazy to do it. Keep in mind, these schools would all pay most of these recruits 10x what their scholarships are worth if they were allowed to...it is really competitive and just throwing out a full ride isn't nearly enough. It comes down to facilities, meal allowances, and other "perks" a lot of the time.

Now fbs schools do have invited walk-ons, who can join the team but don't receive a scholarship. This would probably be the closest thing I know of to what Coach is talking about. Sometimes they'll be rewarded scholarships later on if there is one available and they're making a contribution to the team. Every once in a while, one of these guys will end up being really good, become a breakout star, and even get drafted. Also, some guys would rather walk-on at a school like Alabama than get a free ride to somewhere like Middle Tennessee State, especially if their families have the money.

Liberal thinking, obviously.   President Trump will fix this.

So, in all practicality, it is POSSIBLE for a student to be offered a partial scholarship, since there is no explicit rule against this? Its just not something that teams often do.

Right...the only time you might see something like that is if a school is in really bad financial shape and just couldn't afford all those scholarships....such as a non Power-5 school. Think of football scholarships kind of like the labor markets. The CEO of Apple could, in theory, decide to cut everyone's pay to minimum wage but this would never happen....and if somehow it did, would they be able to attract the talent to compete against Google, Microsoft, etc.?

This is why Melvin Goodrum, CSN, MFT, HHP, never worked for Apple, Google, or Microsoft. They couldn't afford to hire him. Goodrum held out and started Goodrum Enterprise.

Coach, he's gonna be fine.

You will be proud of him no matter what he does, and based on his interests, it sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders. Give him some room to make his own decisions.

Thanks guys. A lot of solid advice. I appreciate it.

Are you seeking advice on concussion recovery periods?

If so,     concussion recovery period > 1 hour.

HTH.

Wouldn't it be a shame if the kid scored ace grades and SAT scores and got offered a partial academic scholarship to Harvard and then because of a concussion, performed poorly on his interview and lost the scholarship offer. Such a shame about Ray.

Coach another thing to consider is that he will get tuition assistance while he is in the military up o $4000 a year. Many attend college while in the military. When he gets out he has the Montgomery GI bill that can pay up to $59K. The post 9-11 GI Bill will after 36 months of service they will pay up to $19,198 directly to the college per year. College housing is up to $1449 a month paid directly to your son. Further depending on MOS job choice he could get an enlistment bonus up to $40K. Usually it's around $5K for a technical school. Just remember the more training he gets in the Coast Guard the longer he has to serve. A truck driver in the military can sign for 2 years but if they are training you for a very involved thing they will demand a long enlistment.  All military branches demand at minimum an 8 year commitment.  So it could 2 years active then 6 years inactive or inactive reserve. Any combination but it's an 8 year commitment. Inactive means he's out completely but if war breaks out they can activate him.  On top of the benefits is that when he applies for a Federal or State job his military service gives him extra points. So if he wants to become a Federal law enforcement officer or local he has an advantage.

My advice is to go to the recruiter with your son and ask questions. If it's not on paper then it's not happening. Recruiters have quotas they have to meet and often are overly enthusiastic about what's going on. It's a misconception that anyone can get into the military. The Coast Guard and the Air force have so many applicants they can pick and choose with many rejected.  In the other branches the same applies if you want technical training that could lead to employment after the military.  It's competitive. One Navy recruiter was heard saying every high school kid wants to enlist to become a Navy Seal. As soon as they wash out on the preliminary testing the Navy tells them their operational need and they soon discover their mistake as the Navy tells them what they will be trained for now.

He graduated HS with a 3.4 and currently has a 3.8. Not exactly UCLA numbers but not that bad. I'm not 100% against it (Coast Guard) but I want him to finish his degree then make a decision. I get the kid is just trying to find himself but his direction is scaring the hell out of me.

I agree Coach... get him to finish his degree first then tell him he can do whatever he wants.

Plus wouldn't he get paid higher at the Coast Guard with a college degree than not?
