Anyone use hand grippers?
« on: November 02, 2015, 07:43:55 AM »
I have a set I bought awhile back that goes up to 350 lbs. I'm thinking about finally using them everyday. Does anyone use them around here? Any special techniques when you use them, like sets and reps?

I alternate using Ivanko hand gripper and Ironmind grippers. I use just two sets after forearm training. Most guys that use them for pure strength use low reps. I found I can hurt both my hands and something in my elbow region if I use too low a rep set. Ironmind grippers are incredibly hard with my tiny hands after number #1 strength.  The Ivanko has a lot of room for adjustment and I use two sets of 20. With my Ironmind I do something like two sets of 5 reps.

Yes, honestly never really got much out of them, but they are a quick, easily demonstrable view of hand strength. I got more out of fat bar work, and timed heavy holds. The grippers also work best with timed holds, and not reps in my experience. Also watch yourself, because it's easy to over work the grippers, and that carries over to all lifts.

Also really work the thumb, and finger tips with lighter grippers and heavy rubber bands for the thumb extensors.

All the time.  I have these daily 1 hour status conference calls.  I just sit and listen while I bang out some reps.

yes, got the heavy grips version 100-350 lbs in 50 lb increments.i used to close  the 200 but grip went to shit and can barely squeeze the 100 for 5 reps. kid can close the 300's but not the 350's. by the way as he got stronger with it he couldn't use the lighter ones anymore they actually broke in his hands the 100's 150's and 200's,,, but they replaced them free of charge.

Yeah Funk, those are the ones I have. I can close 250 and budge 300 so my starting grip isn't so bad. I'm just going to try to work myself up to do 3x40 on all of them.

Why not grab one or multiple barbell plates?

Always convenient, especially at work.

Should combine with eating cooked chicken instead of protein shake for maximum benefit.

Always preferable over grabbing the ass from a male co-worker..

I never got anything out of them, except sore fingers and a feeling of potentially snapping tendons in my hands  :D

I think I got up to a few reps with the #2 COC's, weak as fuck, though I don't have any problems holding an 800lb bar with over/under grip all day long :D

If you can completely close #2 grips you must have a really strong grip in my book.

Completely opposite for me. They hugely helped my overall arm strength believe it or not. I started using them in the evenings while watching TV and never stopped. I love them and have increased the resistance. I have 4 sets now. I highly recommend them.

I believe you would have lots of problems holding an 800lb all day long.

All day long in this context, maybe for a minute :D, long enough to never have a problem missing deads due to grip. Never happened once in 23 years or deadlifting.
Tried a 1K lockout once and held in for 1 or 2 seconds before it slipped out of my hands. :D But the grippers measure hand strength a bit differently. Didn't really feel like I was making any progress with them at all so I gave it up.
