Adonis's comment is just retarded but it itsn't (shouldn't) be EU v USA here. We have broadly similar ideals and values, in theory. EU is more human rights biased (social welfare, health provision, anti-death penalty and foolishly no common army) whereas USA is more individualist and less idealist in the sense that USA recognises war/fighting is necessary to establish/enforce goals.

I think the difference stems from EU starting as a means to prevent war in a wartorn continent. USA fought for independence but has never suffered from a war like European countries did in WW1 WW2 etc etc. How EU has bastardised to become so controlling in everyday life is annoying and an unintended consequence. Likewise USA was non interventionist for WW1 and WW2 til aggravated (Lusitania and Pearl Harbour) and has been intervening insensibly since. Just my 2 cents on it.

Btw, things pushed with the promise of "peace" and "security" are the ones you need to be the most careful against.  It's called a protection racket, and it's being brought to a level previously unseen in our times.

EU is the richest econimic area in the world. Ireland is a rich country purely due to globalisation - in the 1950s when we had an isolationist agrarian economy we were dirt poor. You think Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Intel and all the other MNCs here (as a result of globalisation) do not contribute to the middle classes?

We don't have Nike factories here if you have some distorted image that all MNCs operate sweatshops in foreign countries.

I hate facets of the EU; but the EEC was set up to create economic links and interdependence between states that previously went to war (France, Germany, Italy...), later adding other European countries, then becoming more beaurocratic.
