When Jay Cutler was in his prime as an athlete could he make it in the NFL and if so what position? An offseason Jay could easily be a linebacker but if he came in contest shape he would probably make a good running back.

Agree on all points.

He doesn't have the speed, power, skill or conditioning.

Guys that down play the physicality of football have never played it. It's a brutal sport that the top rugby player couldn't make the cut. If they could they would be making millions in the NFL.

It's Rugby League not Rugby and he did make the cut within months. The 49ers are too stupid to use him. He made their best punt return in 2 years and they barely give him a go. NFL players wouldn't last 5 minutes in League.

Rugby was my first sport and since coming to the mainland, at 10 years old, switched to American style football. Also playing some rugby weekend games here, since a teenager. First impression of American style football... easier compared to Rugby. Also played a bit of Australian rules football, which for the most part, makes American football even easier. OZ football, for wild men only.

Can't knock American football, played 4 years at  Division 1-A and playing weight at between 265 to 285 senior year. But as far as stamina (endurance & strength) go, Rugby and Oz rules football is way ahead of American ball. Can say any is better than the other, but there is a difference between rugby and American ball. I had three relatives who played in the NFL for a number of years.

I've seen rugby players from Fiji, Samoa (both groups) and Hawaii who could do well in American ball....no doubt. The percentage of Samoan & Hawaiian players in the NFL is very high, considering the small population of that racial group. We are just stronger, an accident of birth and genetics.

49'ers didn't give full advantage to that rugby player, very obvious. Some teams better pick him up, to their advantage. GIve him a year...and watch out. NFL clubs keep making major mistakes year after year, as far as players are concerned.

Far as Culter goes, he would not last the first week of rookie camp. Being strong is only the smaller part of being a NFL player. Timing, quickness & speed (not the same thing) are prime qualities looked for in a player. Perhaps the number one quality is heart, the shear will to win at all cost.  If your only ability is to stand in front of a mirror, for hours, and flex..than maybe NFL football is really not for you. Maybe even high school football is not for you either. Some local kids play near 300lbs and as quick as lighting, 400lbs plus benches...etc..

Cutler could barely walk up a flight of stairs, and he failed to do anything with his Mr. Olympia status. No one knew who the hell he was.

Jason "Jay" Thaddeus Cornelius Cutler would have dominated in the NFL.

I've said my peace. But not being a dick and being dead serious when I say this, Cutler or anyone that trains strictly bodybuilding wouldn't last through a week of practice even at the high school level. JPM101 summed it nice. The difference I see between (mind you I haven't really broken it down yet as far as Rugby goes) is American is alactic while Rugby is more lactic. Again, I'm not familiar with the sport enough to know how when subs are put in or taken out.

He's 5'7". He'd be selling hot dogs before they let him on a practice squad.

Exactly. He's basically a dwarf when it comes to NFL standards. He couldn't play high school football...But Ray Cutler, that's a whole different story!

Raking leaves is way more difficult than football.
Leave the leaves where they are, its good for the soil.

Get real bro, they're good at they're given sport, hardly the best athletes on the planet.  ::)   The strongest fastest  athletes on the planet IMO are  olympic weightlifters. Elite olympic lifters actually are the most explosive athletes on the face of the earth, these guys  can outrun world class sprinters (for the first 25 yards) This has been well documented. The coordination strength and speed it takes to throw 500 pounds over your head like that, those guys are on another planet.

In bodybuilding it is 100% on the athlete.

In football or other team sports you can leave it up to the others. Bodybuilding is the pinnacle of human physical mastery.

Brock Lesnar admitted the hardest thing he ever did was participate in NFL training camp.

But Jay Cutler can Incline Hammer strength machine 5 plates 1/2 reps. Surely that could get him into the NFL. And have you seen him do pullups. Amazing strength.
