Officials: San Bernardino shooter apparently was in touch with terror subjects

(CNN)Syed Rizwan Farook -- who along with his wife, Tashfeen Malik, carried out the San Bernardino shooting massacre -- apparently was radicalized and in touch with people being investigated by the FBI for international terrorism, law enforcement officials said Thursday.

Farook's apparent radicalization contributed to his role in the mass shooting of 14 people Wednesday during a holiday party for the San Bernardino County health department, where Farook worked, sources said.

Still, it wasn't necessarily the only driver behind the carnage, as workplace grievances may have also played a role. President Barack Obama hinted as much Thursday when he said that the attackers may have had "mixed motives."

David Bowditch, assistant director in charge of the FBI's Los Angeles office, told reporters Thursday that Farook had traveled to Pakistan.

And two government officials said no red flags were raised when he'd gone to Saudi Arabia for several weeks in 2013 on the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca that Muslims are required to take at least once in their lifetime. It was during this trip that he met Malik, a native of Pakistan who came to the United States in July 2014 on a "fiancée visa" and later became a lawful permanent resident.

Officials had previously said neither Farook and Malik were known to the FBI or on a list of potentially radicalized people. Nor had they had any known interactions with police until Wednesday.

Yet Farook himself had talked by phone and on social media with more than one person being investigated for terrorism, law enforcement officials said.

The communications were "soft connections" in that they weren't frequent, one law enforcement official said. It had been a few months since Farook's last back-and-forth with these people, who officials said were not considered high priority.

FBI official: 'What is the motivation for this?'
As to what role those communications played in the San Bernardino carnage, the official said, "We don't know yet what they mean."

Added Bowdich, from the FBI: "That is the big question for us: What is the motivation for this?"

San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan echoed that sentiment, while adding that whatever led the two to launch Wednesday's assault, they could have killed more had they survived. He pointed to the discovery of hundreds of rounds of ammunition in their rented black SUV as well as in their apartment.

Authorities also found 12 pipe bombs there, as well as hundreds of tools that "could be used to construct IEDs or pipe bombs," the chief said.

"If you look at the amount of obvious pre-planning that went in, the amount of armaments (they) had, the weapons and the ammunition, there was obviously a mission here," added Bowdich. "We know that. We do not know why.

"We don't know if this was the intended target or if there was something that triggered him to do this immediately. We just don't know."

Chief: Shooter left party under 'angry' circumstances
The nightmare began at Wednesday's holiday party, which San Bernardino's police chief said that Farook had left abruptly "under circumstances that were described as angry."

He and his wife returned around 11 a.m. (2 p.m. ET) dressed in "black ... tactical gear" and heavily armed. Each had a semiautomatic rifle and a handgun. Then they opened fire, unloading 65 to 75 rounds.

The couple then slipped out the door and into a SUV, which they'd rented locally and had Utah plates.

By then, officers had arrived and began chasing a number of leads. One of them led them to Farook, after another person at the party at Inland Regional Center expressed "some concern over his behavior," Burguan said Thursday.

CNN last night had a steady stream of gun control advocates on air lecturing about the need for gun control, and all their initial reporting revolved around the 'gun' details, ie what specific types/models and if they got them legally, etc..they didn't report the killers' (middle eastern)name for at least an hour after Fox reported it and even then they had the massive headline FAROOQ IS A US CITIZEN pasted on the whole time. then continued with the 'gun' narrative. the agenda there is painfully obvious.if they are reporting the terrorist ties now it is assuredly only begrudgingly so, they can only ignore it for so long

I didn't watch CNN last night but for 5 minutes worth.  I would think they didn't go the terrorist line until there was more verified evidence which came into view today.

I wonder if this "radicalizing" of people in the US will lead to the government gaining full access to our emails without warrants or oversight?

1am press conference I think?  when they announced her name.

Tough for ppl to shit on MSNBC for not posting the names on 12/2 when they weren't announced until 12/3.   Sure, a few blogs broke them an hour earlier, but until the police confirm, it's tough to just put someone's name on blast like that until you know it, not because you're reporting from a blog on the police scanner.

I don't have an issue with outlets trying to confirm...within a few hours. Its obvious that NBC in LA is close to the FBI office and the San Bern sheriffs as they got info leaked. They also told the Fox guy they were in pursuit as it was happening. I've leaked stuff to the press when it benefits us. They knew..the FBI that they had a terror attack as opposed to some bs. They would not get involved within an hour like they did. Another note...San Bernardino has very very nice toys...holy shit.

Yeah O I saw that......Ok if I was there I'm not sure I would have rambo'ed it unless I was in that room. You shoot..now you have 3 assholes in vests..with way way way more ammo then you and rifles all targeting you. Still, had there been a cultural of "this is a place where people carry" it might have been avoided or mitigated to some extent. Plus getting involved is a good way to get smoked by the cops in this situation. I shoot a shit ton....take lessons from a former DOS Diplo security guy once a week. We were talking about it today on the range. 3 headshots while taking fire....tough shit and I tried it today from 25 meters. It took awhile...we used cardboard targets as desks and shit so u had to move and shoot. Nope...I hit enough center mass to make them stop but not on the first few goes. This was with a .40 springfield XP. My guy was better but still, at speed...fuck no.

Why can't you be less like a sissy and more like Steven Seagal? He once woke up from a long coma, and killed a dozen baddies using 2 bullets and a catheter.

P.S.: in case it's not blatantly obvious, of course I'm being sarcastic and making a joke.

Shit is hard dude....I usually go to the range once or twice a week for about 2 hours and I always start on a paper target from 5 meters. I make a couple of cup sized circles and just shoot those...draw and shoot for 20 minutes till I have a group. Then I do fun shit but if you don't practice you don't hit shit. The crap you see in movies or even the shooting skills of an average cop.....look at that SUV last night. They shot the shit out of it.

Apparently they are going to beat that drum every time something like this happens because there is a large part of their viewership that are listen to it.

But in the light of new info they are beating the terrorist drum which is worse because things may become it that wouldn't just happen with gun violence.

Yeah, shooting is hard even. I doubt I could hit a barn with a gun from 3 feet. I have nothing but respect for the people who can quick-draw and put a bullet anywhere on the target.

As for the movies, if anyone thinks that shit is realistic... well... all I can say is that the Olympia is within everyone's reach. All you need is some bee pollen and a patented bicep supinator. ;D

Today I did 2 rounds at .91 from a holster...roughly center mass about scapula level. I started at 1.9 and worked my way down after a few mags. It takes practice. I do drills in the mirror...reloading mags from my hip...quick draw to ensure weapon is up and on target from the holster before I get it punched out. We did a drill where you push the target and then hip shoot. All cops do that drill so its relevant.

virtually all of journalists, Democrats and their voters' 'knowledge' of guns literally comes from watching tv and Hollywood movies. the things these people have said- on the public stage-while pushing for gun control is so painfully wrong and ridiculous no amount of face-palming can handle it

People are put on those list without due process, keeping someone from utilizing their second amendment rights without due process is illegal...good to know you're for rights violations though

reminds of liberal talk.  I'd rather have 10,000 murderers go free, than one innocent man go to jail for it.

maybe we could give milk and cookies to everyone on the terror list and if they don't shoot up the cookie party, we remove their name?

these san berdino shooters had contact with someone on the terror list.  They got their guns legally.

Wait, let me guess - so you support the gunshow loophole too?  Where felons can buy guns without even an ID, from strangers they meet on the street?
