Here's a before and after.  The clear day is a day that China forced all factories to shut down so they could have a big parade and celebration and then the city the very next day when the factories all started up again

I automatically think she has some extremely contagious disease and stay 10 feet away from her. Seen a few people at my old university wear them too. Makes me uneasy to be around people who wear hospital equipment outside the hospital....

In the mid 90's, in professional cycling, they had The Tour China. It was a big 10 day stage race held at the very end of the season. The cyclists were getting sick, and some even tried wearing surgical masks. Finally, after suffering through that, the pro circuit decided to end the Tour there.

Ironically, the major sponsor was Kent Cigarettes. lol. Kent was printed everywhere and on everything.

I've been to Guangzhou numerous times and yes the smog is very bad. However I've been 2 hours out into the country from there in China and the air is fine.
