That is a picture perfect squat. And, yes, that is how it is done. But that does not mean everyone can do that.

Just like I know what a picture perfect snatch is or a flawless balance beam performance, but there is no way in hell I could do movements like that.
Not Denise Masinos.

I find standard squats too painful at the moment so i am looking at old ideas, not a bad thing. I did leg press before it and i did not use heavy weight but did 20 reps per set. I see the use of this lift though for you strength orientated competitors.

Painfull? Your balls hit the ground and it hurts? Every other scenario means that you are doing something wrong. Here you have a best advises about the matter:

I would add that it is always a good idea to warm up your knees before the exercises by doing couple of sets of seated leg extensions, using tiny weight and lot of reps, stretching the front thigh carefully between the sets and between every set after that. Lot of reps means something like 70 - 100 reps, and tiny weight = something you are able to do 100 reps. I usually use 50 - 70 lb for that. It doesn't take anything from your thighs but it do wonders for your knee. Many of the lifters are suffering with too tight patellar tendons, so by doing that warm up and stretches you speed up the metabolism of the tissue of the tendons, and it will end your problems with the knees if you have any..

Hell, I don't think I could do 70-100 reps on the squat with no weight at all let alone light weight.

My guess is that most Bodybuilders would be a crumpled heap on the floor after a set of 50, full body, bodyweight squats.

It's true that squats are a full body exercise, but not if you have a barbell on your back which turns the upper body into a stabilizing mechanism.

Consider why you would squat in nature, either to pick something up off the ground, or to explode off the ground to grab something out of your reach, like a piece of hanging fruit. Neither of those has your hands up by your ears on the descent.

Your arms would be down and back, then brought up and forward powerfully for an explosive move.

That's why sprinters have good upper bodies.

Smith machine squats aren't really squats, Clean & Press are Olympic lifts, not Powerlifts, most Getbiggers don't know who the legendary Strength Coach Kevin Tolbert is.
"Grimmick" Grimek was an "O lifter" not a Powerlifter.

Even though I hate them, I always do dead lifts (both knuckles facing away from me). I consider it the most functional movement you can do with a barbell. Barbell curls is another functional movement

Nice lift Tom.....that`s about the same depth I hit.

Thanks Wes. It felt good. I hadn't competed in several years and it was nice to get back on the platform.

Gym, competition, Muscle Beach weight pit- whenever I squat my depth is always the same I believe. Flat back, neutral chin position, big breath of air at the top. It seems to work nicely.

Do you really enjoy about that nitpicking? So if it isn't a squat, what is it? Let me see, you have the weight on your shoulders, you bend your knees until your ass is far below the parallel...well, that is the handbook definition of the squat, but of course you know better..

Does this look like he's doing his lower back any favors?

Anyone over 30 should cringe looking at this pic.

As far as his form, the force of the excessive weight is driving him downward past normal squat range of motion, overstressing his knees and lower back. On the way up, the excessive weight is causing his knees to buckle and his lower back/hip hinge to bend too far forward, also overstressing his knees and lower back. The cherry on top is the bar digging into to his cervical vertebrae which could result in nerve or disk damage.

This is strictly working out for the young and dumb.

I have a C6/7 problem in my neck. Front squats i do like but last time i did them i felt too much pressure on my neck. I mean a pressure i know that is not good for my problem. lowering the weight to a lower than shoulder height suits my needs and is pain free.

Same here.  This has helped a lot, but if I squat over 250 with it, it feels awkward and unbalanced.

That`s how I do them too,but I don`t go real heavy these days..........just enough to kick my ass,but no heavy triples, singles or stuff like that............my back rebels if I do.

Exactly. On a couple of reps it seemed to me he was lifting with his back instead of driving his hips up.

What is normal squat range of motion?

I say this in all seriousness.

It's the distance your ass would be off the ground if you were taking a shit without a toilet.
