The issue with smith machine movements is they are absolutely vertical up and down. Very few movements are linear like this , which creates shear forces as rep is performed. I recommend barbell with way less weight as natural path of motion.

yep

as I said you are forced in to lifting in an unnatural path

not good

impedes your natural range of motion

you are better off doing it free weight with better form and lighter weight
Is this the same with a bench press ? lighter weight meaning 500 lbs? so you must use more on the Smith machine?

Dear Gentlemen,
This may be of absolutely no value, but Craig Richardson and I have used the Smith Machine for virtually every body part for over 17
years and find it to be excellent.  At some point, you must consider safety and being free from injury.

Didn't realize there was only one "natural path".

Smith machine bent rows are the BEST!!!  You can use a good amount of weight AND hold it at the top for a second! Aint nothing pussy about it! Whatever works, works! Do my squats on the smith machine too

Congratulations with your blue stars, Mike!

The one issue with the smith machine, as previously stated, is that it locks you into one range of motion. Thus, if a body part hurts in that specific range of motion, there is nothing you can do to alter. The only thing you can probably do is use lighter weight.

However, if youre using free weight, it allows you to use various ROM's and different angles. As such, if you find an angle where the body part doesnt hurt, then you may be able to go heavy.

What's an "Individuel?"  ??? ??? ???

Yes, we all know weight training varies depending on the person. However, that does not mean that one cannot offer advice on training.

good point apologies

I still believe the smith machine isn't suitable for rows

due to the unnatural motion
