I think we're being a little harsh here on Planet Fitness. To be fair, I've never been in one, nor would I. I can't imagine working out in such an ugly environment with everything being that dark purple color. However, they are appealing to a certain niche. A niche which looks very out of place in a hardcore gym or a more serious health club. That niche is of course overweight/older men/women, younger not shapely women, skinny or average build men, etc. For these folks trying to exercise around guys or girls with way above average bodies can be very uncomfortable and intimidating, and probably not likely to be physically productive. These folks just want to get some exercise, maybe improve their physiques a little. So I think it's wrong to criticize Planet Fitness for appealing to these types of individuals. Conversely, if you're a guy training for the Arnold Classic amateurs, clearly Planet Fitness would not be the best place for you to train.
