It says he was on probation for multiple felonies and had a gun.  Probably sentenced for all the other shit and it added up to 60 years.

Even with burglary and a gun violation, there's no way any rational judge would hand out such a sentence.  He must have pissed off the wrong person

Apparently the judge cut him a break.  He has 8 prior felonies and 4 misdemeanors, now committing another felony.

" Instead, Destry added up the points from all his past crimes. The sentencing guidelines suggested Smith spend between 13 and 85 years in prison. Destry ordered 60. Because Florida law requires that inmates serve 85 percent of their sentences, with credit for time already served, the earliest Smith could be released is in 48 years. He'd be 71 years old."

It'll probably get reduced to something like 20 anyway at some point.

how else do you punish someone who keeps driving despite the suspension? Typically when someone runs over and kills multiple people while intoxicated they have multiple license suspensions but continued driving because judges are such liberal pussies they refuse to sentence these people to hard time. In this case, you have a career criminal who refuses to obey the law despite given no less than FIFTEEN chances to go straight.

I think a reason for many light sentences is because the prison populations are overpopulated. Hell, in many prisons, they use the gymnasium to hold people; they set up beds where people sleep. Fact of the matter is, the prisons are OVERCROWDED. Where do you keep all these people? Thus, people are going to get off on light sentences. Look at all the sexual offenders who are out. Go search the sexual offenders registry and see how many live near you. Probably A LOT!! Sexual offenders who molest children receive the bare minimum. Its absolutely ridiculous.
