I never say a word. They recognize mass and symmetry when they see it.

Good Lord no. I stay as far away from the word as possible. Even when trying to identify my preferred method of "fitness" I make it sound like some kind of magic mix of fitness methods "plus traditional weight training, of course"

Admitting to bodybuilding is akin to admitting you love the cock. Actually, loving the cock is probably more socially acceptable.

From a ordinary (not familiar with The Life) woman's perspective (yeah, yeah. Who cares? I know), "bodybuilding" is synonymous with narcissistic douchebaggery. Which we all know is literally correct. As much as an ordinary women dig the muscle, the narcissistic douchebaggery is not a net-positive. For a woman, ideally you'd look like a Greek god, but do little to nothing to achieve that. Therefore, you just "look great" and don't spend hours at the gym, presumably lovingly watching yourself flex in the mirror. Like ANYBODY does that.

Admitting to bodybuilding to most of the world is about as socially stimulating at admitting to herpes.

Exatcly. I used to say that I'm at the gym five days a week, but now I just mumble "Well.. quite a lot.. but you know - that's the drill of this game..", unless it's a fitness psycho chick that digs big muscles ("Oh... I like to watch how men lift heavy weights.." , literally heard this from one).
Another good one is - "I was born this way" and quickly change topic.

OTOH, it's kinda liberating to just let it fly with some folks. I was consulting with a small software company down in Boston this past summer and the VP Sales, who was a smoking hot, younger, smart, successful woman asked me, "I need to know how you stay so fit". I looked at her and said, "Mondays." She said, "what about Mondays?"

"On Mondays I have to force myself to take a day off"

She got the message and the determination. And she wanted the cock.

Nope.  I sometimes say I that used to be a bodybuilder back when it meant something to be one.  Not anymore.  Now I just say I am somewhat of a physical culturist.  Of course no one knows what this is unless they're around 100 or so years old.

Haha! She was 6' in flats and in heels was looking me right in the eye. I think that she'd had quite enough with the beta males in Boston.

what do you need explained?

you hide your passion from people because you are embarrassed of your passion, as if it should be embarrassing to take care of your appearance and health

that's as beta as it gets, ironic considering many of you got into this sport to be the alpha

I don't hide anything and I am not embarassed, also I give a fuck about what people might think of me.
It's just not important for me to mention it exclusively.
Also I got into this sport rather by curiosity than anything else.

I would hazard that more here of the Betta splendens than beta persuasion.  Look it up, I have used it in the metaphorical.  Physical culture predates bodybuilding and in truth it is the purest form of the passion that is taking care of oneself.
