Thanks brother.  I was still a long way from figuring out how to "dial in" for bodybuilding shows. Powerlifting was easy- bodybuilding was always much tougher for me.  Always fun though.  Stay cool man.

same here on the bodybuilding.  I had an uncanny ability of getting rid of 25 lbs. of pure muscle in the three days before a show.

I graduated high school in the mid 80's.   I remember as a kid in school, at most there would be one fat kid in class.  That was about it.   Back then, we didn't have fast food restaurants in close proximity to schools like they do now.  No wonder so many kids these days are obese.  Majority are hooked on processed crap by the time they even get into high school.  It's crazy.

Not sure....I ate salami/cheese on wonder bread, those disgusting hostess fruit pies which were crisco and sugar, and some other snack almost every day for lunch and I was ripped.

Much more entertainment options result in much more sedentary kids.  You can watch cartoons on Netflix or YouTube all day long.  Video games out the wazoo.  And while sitting there they are snacking.  And many are on psych meds which screw up their metabolism further.

I ate a ton of crap as a kid but we almost never ate out.  Some McDonalds here and there but not like today where it is incredibly cheap and omnipresent.  Couple this with awful parents usually fat and on depression meds themselves always bringing huge amounts of sweets into the house.  Tvs and tablets and computers in bedrooms.  Parents allowing kids to vegetate and graze.

'86 here. We had every fastfood establishment you could imagine within the 30-45 minute to-and-fro walking distance lunchtime allowed. Several fatties, but only enough that you could still bully them in good conscience.

Seen it happen pretty quickly in real life to some young kids.  In 6-18 months, eating crap, lotsa fast food, chips, cookies, not going outside playing games and watching too much tv.  Got sloppy fat 20-30 lbs overweight.

Similarly, I saw it reverse itself in the same kids in 6-12 months once situation changed for the kids.

Exactly - within a mile of each other in Central NJ, we had:  Roy Rogers / McDonalds / Burger King / Arby's / Wendy's / Stewart's (hot dogs) and two kick ass NJ diners, as well as a couple pizza places.

Steven Reiter

you are right.  once I watched it I realized it wasn't benfatto, and recognized steven from my old mags but couldn't remember his name.  I remember thinking 'why isn't this guy pro??  even more impressive in video than in stills.

You can look back at the top 5 in most shows from the 80s and they look better than than todays pro`s.I remember seeing pics of Steven at the 83 nationals and being impressed but can`t recall him competing again.

When I went to my 25 year high school reunion it was interesting to see that quite a few of the skinny guys in school filled out considerably and several are quite buff now.  And conversely, quite a few of the fatties got slimmer.  I think some went on some serious dieting prior to the reunion.  A third of my graduating class that was at the 25 year reunion was divorced at least once.

My senior year of high school was 83/84

Bob Paris was the NPC National winner in 1983 and Jeff King was the AAU winner

I think both were ~ 23 at the time

naturally...I assumed I would look like they did by the time I reached that age... ???

things weren't better back then, the only difference is you were younger, healthier, and probably less jaded

why would you miss the video store today when there is netflix, on demand, or you could just download a torrent?

youtube allows you to see any music video you want whenever you want, rather than waiting for it on mtv

the only thing that looked better about women back then is they didn't have tattoos, other than that they're the same

movies and music were better then, but the net today allows us to relive that stuff whenever we want

the only thing i miss from the 80's is bodybuilding, our sport will never be that good again and you can't just rewatch a contest like you can a movie or music you liked from that decade

Things like YT, Netflix just make you not appreciate video's/movies as much. Before, a given show played once a week, one time slot. If you missed it, tough shit unless you or someone else recorded it with the VCR.

There was something about going to take a piss during commercials, rushing to get back to watch the rest of your show that just made it so much more fun.

I loved the example of going to a video store! I was always there renting games and hoping to rent the new releases. As shitty as it was to have to bring them back if not renting others, the whole experience was so much more exciting. Also, having the game for just a few days made you play non stop wanting finish it.

And did women act like such cum dumpsters back then? Sure some or them, but now it's soooo overdone, no taboo's exist no more, everything is in the open. It's not like it was, but you're right we were much less jaded back then and new to the world in general.
