http://www.whec.com/article/stories/s4020833.shtml?cat=565Long story short: An ex-boyfriend killed his ex-girlfriend and her friend (probably boyfriend) with a knife, then killed himself. Students attended SUNY Geneseo and lived off-campus.
Police say the suspect in the Geneseo deaths killed his ex-girlfriend, another man and then himself early Sunday morning. At a press conference on Monday, police released information from their preliminary investigation into the three bodies that were found Sunday morning at a home on Wadsworth Street. Right now, they say they are still working through information to figure out everything that happened.
According to Geneseo police, 24-year-old Colin Kingston entered the home of his ex-girlfriend early Sunday morning -- between 5:30 a.m. and 6:21 a.m. -- with a large knife. Officers say Kingston and 21-year-old Kelsey Annese, of Webster, had recently broken up and Kingston was distraught.
After entering the home, police say Kingston killed Annese and 24-year-old Matthew Hutchinson in the upstairs area. Police say Kingston then made a phone call to his father saying he harmed Annese; his father then called 911. When police arrived, they say all three victims were dead at the home.
Police say Kingston and Annese had dated for about three years -- and after the break-up he had made some suicidal comments to people.
Officer Jeffrey Szczesniak says, "He certainly was upset, went there. His exact intentions -- we don't know what he was thinking as he entered the place. We certainly don't know what his intentions were when he entered that room."
Annese was a senior education and Spanish major. She was also a member of the Geneseo women's basketball team. Hutchinson was also a senior, a Geneseo hockey player and volunteer firefighter.
Monday, banners hung from the fire station and a Canadian flag was flying in his memory. The tragic incident occurred as students returned to campus from winter break.
SUNY Geneseo President Denise Battles says, "It's a profoundly sad day for all of us at SUNY Geneseo and in the village as we begin to mourn these heartbreaking deaths."
Battles called it a "profoundly sad" day on campus -- and says they are planning a remembrance ceremony on Wednesday night.
News of these deaths sent shockwaves through Geneseo. Hutchinson served as a firefighter and played on the school's hockey team. Annese was a member of the women's basketball team at Geneseo. Both teams were together Monday and both coaches told News10NBC they're really trying to figure out what the next step is.
On the basketball side, Kelsey Annese played in a win against Buffalo State about 12 hours before police say she was killed. She's played 13 minutes, scored five points, three rebounds. That's how coach says the team will remember her.
"She played above herself and ultimately was a huge reason we were able to get out of Buffalo with a win that day," says coach Scott Hemer. "I think the players have grasped to that fact that it was a special day for her, the look on her face when she left the gym."
"She overcame odds and not only made the team but worked her way up to earn the role as captain going into her senior year."
Hemer adds, "I don't know if there's an easy answer for what's being said. There's a lot that's being said and a lot of silence at this point. I think the most effective release we've had so far is just getting them to share stories."
Hutchinson was on the top defensive pairing for the Geneseo men's hockey team.
"Through the recruiting process, my assistant coach Kris Heeres did a lot of the recruiting with him," says Geneseo Hockey Head Coach Chris Schultz. "He came back excited to the office telling me about Matt, just simply because when you like a player on the ice, it's one thing. But when you talk to him with the pads off, that's a completely different thing. You have to have players meet the culture you're trying to have in your locker room. He met that."
"When we got together today at lunch we kind of mapped out a course for where we're going to go from here," adds Schultz. "I don't know where the course is going to take us but we definitely know where we're going to go. And it's going to be to honor Hutch in everything that we do."
Hutchinson played Saturday in a Geneseo win as well. He registered an assist.
