Cardio and/or strength goals?
« on: January 19, 2016, 06:31:42 AM »
Any getbiggers out there have some actual cardio and/or strength goals for 2016?

My BIG goal is to break 30 min in a legit 5k road race, by this fall.
I'm heavy and slow now, so I need to be realistic.
That's about 9:40 a mile pace and for me would be kickin' ass.
I know, that's turtle slow for many , but, wtf, at least I'm honest.

PS/ No desire for bodybuilding or muscle size goals .

You'll never do it.  Hope this helps.

Fully recover from my ACL reconstruction and get my basic strength and balance back to a point where I can build on it after the Doctors give me the all clear.

Hey How is the stepper? I typically do running.  My wife keeps challenging me to do this with her. She doesn't think I can do HIIT on that thing for 30 mins.

If it's the stepmill, pictured below, it's vicious.

If you do it on a decent speed, there's no way to rest....if you don't hold the handles, it's even harder.....see if you can give it a shot when she's not around.  ;D

I'm in 10x cardio shape since the last time I had access to one...so maybe that could be a factor in my recollection of it.

If it is truly HIIT, I would avoid

But if it is just intervals of higher step rate, then it is very doable.
That machine got me into contest shape.

Seriously? I'm a cardio fanatic, it's changed my physique a lot, but the running is getting hard on my knees. What was your strategy when doing this?  HIIT or just a steady pace for a set time?

Never did HIIT. I didn't have energy for that. I slowly increased the pace from 75 steps/min. up to 110 over the 30-45 minutes I was on.

Good enough to make changes and on the subject of HIIT cardio who really does it Balls to walls? most do a watered down version. Too much talk about HIIT in my opinion. as long as you up the pace changes will occur. Fartlek training we did years ago (speed play) nothing new just these HIIT people get excited about it.

Good post and I think the key is to vary the pace intensity and active recovery interval.

Just be honest and objective with your performance regardless of the machine or method .
As I get older, cardio fitness is starting to take over as my main goal.

At this point , it's quite a challenge for me.

My key indicator was being able to do 100 floors on the original stair stepper under 20 min.
Some might laugh at that, but it always wore my ass out.

Yes it is. That definitely looks like a good workout. How much time would you allocate per session for this?

30 - 40min is the ideal in my opinion, at a good , steady pace.
Less then 20 is too intense and over an hr is too low intensity.

I've seen a lot of bodybuilders do those sit down /layback exercise bikes for 90 min at very low intensity.
I guess that's a good way to lose fat, but seems fairly ineffective for cardio fitness?

I have a sled and a Prowler. 20 minutes at reasonable intensity should pretty much finish you.

Yup....vicious.

I did Tabata battle ropes - ALL OUT  20 sec on / 10 off for 4 total minutes.   Almost puked.  Max effort is a must though.

Plus, I did it after an hour of conditioning....but still.
