Unfortunately for her, my colleagues and I are in medical education.  She was appropriately "removed from all clinical duties" and an investigation is now underway.  I'll give you one guess how this will end.  While I no longer sit on our equivalent of the "court" I do sit on our equivalent of the "appellate court" (if a student appeals a dismissal, the appeal comes before me).  Today I spoke with physician, nursing, and PA faculty.  All agreed she is toast.  I am certain my counterparts in the hospital feel the same way.  You appear determined to defend this young woman.  Why, I neither know nor care.  You are in denial if you think she is not going down.  It's call "unprofessional conduct" and it is cause for termination.  The case will certainly have to go through formal reviews and appeals but the conclusion is not in doubt. :-X

Residents in the past have done far more and been punished far less.  Your forgone conclusion may become an expensive proposition... A good ol white boy gets a dui, keeps job.  An ethnic woman is not even arrested and gets dismissed?

Time will tell. I think she will be safe, internal punishment (extra call, holidays, etc) - assuming this is strike one.  Maybe alcohol counseling.  Otherwise she will be politely asked to find another program.

We'll never get the full details but it's foolish to assume it's a forgone conclusion after asking a few people. By 4th year "Clinical duties" may in fact be elective rotations and mean very little.

I'm defending the process and commitment programs make to physician development, not her actions. Compared to the DUIs, bar brawls, inappropriate medical decision making, "lack of insight", and host of other more important mistakes medical careers survive she's got more than an adequate chance of completing 4th year.

If board certified, chances improve even more. Hopefully she wasn't partying all the time, LOL!

People can be too reactive in high profile cases before taking the time to review what guidelines they're bound to by the ACGME. Once people realize there's a process (and they aren't untouchable) calmer heads usually prevail. Programs also realize terminated residents (regardless of reason) affect rank order lists. Saying "We would fully support the decision to complete 4th year in another program and not impede the process in any manner" would be better for all parties. That's not the same as a termination and losing the matching funds. I'm intentionally ignoring losing a 4th year resident because by then it's probably electives.

In terms of social media. People are still in denial about how much weight its given. One friend reviews all social media of people who apply where he works and eliminates anyone drinking, at a party, or even with friends who are repeatedly drinking.

I'm astonished that anyone is defending her.  She physically assaulted the guy (ineffectually but still), damaged his property and invaded his vehicle....that whole outburst lasted minutes.  Balanced, well-adjusted people don't ever do that, no matter how drunk they are.  If she were male or black, she'd be sitting in jail

It's not like you can chalk this up to "youthful indiscretions" either, as she is 30.

Most people are just fine. I don't say anything on any social media (including getbig) that I wouldn't say in the real world.

I have no problem with using my real name.

Great minds and all that :D

Earlier, drkaje suggested that having a criminal record--eg: DUIs, assaults, instances of medical misconduct--would not necessarily preclude a physician from being employed.  Is this true in your experience?  I can't imagine it is, but I am admittedly ignorant on the hiring practices of medical clinics

Wow ok so she didn't even go to a real medical school, just one of those "second-chance" schools in the Carribean, so it's not like she's some extraordinary talent anyways.

Also she grew up in Miami Beach--the Hollywood of Miami--so its no surprise that she acts this way.  Hopefully justice prevails and her position is given to a more-deserving candidate

People don't get to play judge, jury, and executioner of a career for every mistake. There are tons of physicians who have been in treatment programs, "Friends of Bob", etc... You'll also find loads of people working in hospitals who have lost licenses in other states or cannot get malpractice insurance.

Bay's an awesome guy and we've gotten along for 10+ years. I've got nothing but love for the Brother. Sometimes academics forget they live in an ivory tower. :) My sister, God Bless Her, is even worse when it comes to crap like this and thinking elite liberals are specifically charged to prevent assholes like that drunk chick from being in public service.

It's not a hard residency to get into. Reason for that is that Neurologists don't get paid very well. Compared to surgical residencies and even cardiac and gastroenterology fellowships, Neurology residents that finish their residencies and become Neurology attendings, typically make between 150K-200K in NYC. Whereas a Cardiothoracic or Neurosurgeon can make millions and Gastroenterologists and Cardiologists can make between 300-400K. So, I don't think she might be as smart as it seems.

I agree with everything else you said.

Well...she's IMG with a medical degree from Grenada do I think can put the brilliant doctor thing to rest

I think she should put that mega sized snoot to work and toss the UBER drivers's ripe salad ( after an 8hr shift).

Nothing wrong with going to the Carib for your medical degree. Some kids just prefer the beautiful scenery to a top notch education!

Geez people are harsh as fuck on her about her nose.

Big noses on girls can be cute. I actually consider it an endearing imperfection on many girls.  :)
