It can't hurt...the starches absorb the humidity and so help with the drying.

You have to remove the battery in order to have no electric potentials to short out and possibly damage something.

I know nothing about electronics but my wife is really into that and loves apple products. Never had an issue with them.

Ran mine through a washing machine cycle and put it into dry white rice for a week and it worked afterward. Tried this with 2 phones and didn't work at all...
