Here in NY, there was a major crane collapse about a week ago. One person died and it's a miracle there weren't more deaths. There's always a ton of construction going on here and the real estate sector is obsessed with supertalls. This is how the giant cranes are erected. I've seen these things under construction before, but wasn't sure what I was looking at. It's definitely an impressive feat of engineering.

When the building is finished, they lower the parts down all except for a few small pieces that will fit in a standard freight lift/elevator.

That crane fell about a 1/4 mile from where I was working, choppers everywhere all day. It's a miracle more shit doesn't happen with all the work going on here in the city.

I'm a lift and crane surveyor, I'm not trained up on tower cranes yet but it looks very interesting, you look up at those things and think, how did it get up there, how does it get down etc

There's a 100 odd yr old ship building crane localy that's just been refurbished, the owners were worried about the safety of the structure being so old, so stress gauges were attached at calculated points and the crane was overloaded , the fucker didn't budge... Built to last, belt and braces, I couldn't see anything built now still standing and working 100 odd yrs down the line

millions of people in ny, it's a wonder more weren't killed in a similar manner...think superbowl commercial, lifting jeff goldbloom playing a piano... how do you think they get big junk like that up 50 floors or more.

Meat Glue. I white powder that can weld scraps of meat into a piece of slab that can pass as premium. Restaurateurs have been caught deceiving customers. I've been tempted to try this, but have yet to take the plunge.

This is just a catch-all thread for technological innovations that many may not be familiar with. The video itself is five years old. MDF processing and the science behind softdrink cans isn't breaking news, either, just interesting stuff that fits the theme of the thread.

Even when you know that the crane collapses when it tries to move this water tank, it's still a little jarring when it happens.
