Car died while driving on Tuesday. took it to a commercial mechanic and he said something about the head gasket and compression cylinder. Any idea of what that will cost me?

If it's just a gasket it's cheap, at least the parts. Labour will be the hardest part.

head gasket replacement alone will run close to 1500. im not sure what you mean by "compression cylinder," is he just talking about a misfiring cylinder?

The head gasket is like a washer between the cylinder head and engine block. If it blows, air leaks out  instead of compressing.

As said, it's a cheap fix from a parts stand point. The labor is the big cost.

usually when people do a head gasket, they also replace the water pump and timing belt since you are already there and those things need replacement anyways

When they take off the cylinder head, given the mileage, there's a good chance they find other issues.

You might want to consider an upgrade.
