property taxes this year went up massively. what u can do
« on: February 26, 2016, 01:12:03 PM »
there was little or no change in 2015

this is going to kill the economy for 2017 no matter whos president

when i say property taxes increased i dont mean just by a little bit many have doubled in property tax amount and i mean low income black familys that own there house used to pay 500 a year now have to pay 900 and more

whats goin on now is massive theft

i feel bad for this one older black dude i know hes 70 and his wife died and now they are jackin up his property tax and hes barely getting by

im helping a few people with there appeals by finding comps

in other words the city is criminally increasing property values on houses that have not been renovated or updated in order to get more taxes!

the city is basically saying your old house is worth just as much if not more than a similar house with new renovations

Low income families tend not to own houses.

This is a local issue based on state guideline (thanks Republicans who have controlled our state Govt!)  (The North Carolina General Statutes mandates that counties in North Carolina conduct a countywide revaluation of real property at least once every eight years.)

Nothing to do with the President.  Hope this helps. :)

Gentrification.  There will always be low income housing so don't worry about that.  Also Veterans and old people can get Property taxes forgiven.

Standard of living has not gone up and wages have not increased at all.  You are against raising any wages so enjoy the worsening status quo.  ;)

The Federal government (President) has no jurisdiction over property taxes. Property taxes are levied by the State, County and City. If folks want to do something about property taxes, they should get enough signatures to submit a bill to get it on the ballot. This has worked to stem the rise in property taxes in other states, such and California and Oregon.

The state with the highest property taxes is New Jersey. The rate is 2.38 percent of assessed value. Median Property Tax Paid on Homes is $7,331. Median Home Value is $307,700.

I am not black. I'm 71. My wife died. By Oregon law, my property taxes increased not more than 6% over last year. They are currently around $5,000.

It is very kind of you to help others out with their property tax problems. I wish you and them the best of luck in your endeavors.

There is a provision in the federal tax codes where people of a certain age can go to the local court house and fill out a form that reduces their tax burden because of age to about 50%.

Has he done this and filled out this form?

Many seniors do not know about it, but it's there.

Tell him to go do it.

The age of a property is only part of how it is assessed. Many metropolitan areas have older homes. More and more folks want to live in an urban area. This has driven up home prices in these cities, thus the taxes go up too.

Or work to increase wages and stop bad trade agreements that do nothing to help the economy in destroying manufacturing and jobs as a result.

Interesting. The tax burden usually applies to State and/or Federal taxes. Some states allow certain qualifying seniors property tax relief or deferment. This program encumbers the property. If you want to sell it or otherwise transfer the deed, the taxes along with a hefty interest rate must be satisfied.

Income tax relief for certain seniors and/or disabled people comes into play when they file their State and Federal taxes. Generally, the any tax relief applies mostly to folks who are considered at or below the poverty level. In Oregon there is an "Earned income credit" available for these folks.

By lowering taxes, I assume you mean Federal income taxes. You are right of course. No matter who is President, the poor and middle class will continue to feel the pinch the most.

Property taxes are deductible when you can itemize your deductions. In order to benefit from itemizing deductions, one needs to have enough deductions to exceed the standard deduction. Many low income folks do not meet this criteria.

What's your plan for the future of education and the military? Do you think we need them? Would it be better if kids were all home schooled? Should the military be all volunteer, meaning without pay or should we dispense with the military altogether? What to do about those folks who put their lives on the line so the rest of us can feel safer and ended up permanently disabled? Should we take the attitude that it's par for the course and just their tough luck that they lost limbs, their mental health, or whatever?

It seems to me everyone has an opinion how to "fix" things. Opinions are worthless without concrete, well thought out plans and propositions. It also seems to me that we put too much stock in politician's rhetoric, especially when campaigning for election or re-election. It is my opinion, political campaigning reduces those who seek election to nothing more than used car salesmen who will do and say anything to finalize the deal.

What say you Marty?

PS

I thought your thread was about property tax. It seems to have morphed into a rant about all taxes and the failings of government in general.
