I think parts and labor on a wooden rack (done right with new materials + misc tools) would be close to the base cost of the very basic Elitefts - http://www.elitefts.com/shop/strength-equipment/power-racks/eliteftstmold-school-3x3-power-rack-no-weight-storage.html  or Rogue - http://www.roguefitness.com/rogue-re-3 .

The elite FTS rack is you posted is $679

The 4, 4x4 pressure treated 10 foot timbers in this rack are about 10-15 bucks each, max....that's the majority of the wood.  Only thing this rack needs is a bar across the front for chins, and maybe some pegs at the bottom if you want to use bands.   Price isn't near the Elite/Rogue racks.

It's all the incidentals though, wood racks are cheap if you've got a shop and lots of misc handy (various bolts, pipes, drill/hole saw bits, tie in plates, etc....). If not you probably run within a couple of hundred dollars of one of the ones I listed if you count labor. At that point ir becomes very shrugable if it's worth it.

Is somebody charging themselves for labor?  The whole idea is to build it yourself.

Bolts, pipes, tie ins, are all cheap and can be had at a plumber's supply or home depot.. Dude, it's not even close - i've priced this already when I contemplated builiding one.  That rack pictured costs less than 150....full $500 bucks cheaper.

Even if you got charged 50 bucks an hour for labor, it's half the cost.

You're right.  I'm flip-flopping on my previous position.  It has nothing to do with being good value or being

Accountancy has no place in a private workshop.  It's impossible to reckon the projected profit potential of being able to cut a blind foxtail m&t joint or the value of the experience associated with any other aspect.  After all, the guy who built the rack can probably go construct a building to put the rack in.  What's that save/worth?  Ultimately it's down to whether you want to do it and will enjoy the project.

Now lets have a look at these famous stands and sleds and boxes of yours, young fella.

A few months ago, Set It Up posted a link to a really cool wooden bench/squat rack combo that he'd built in his basement gym, which I'm very tempted to have a go at when the weather warms up here (too cold in the garage right now which is the only place I can put it).  I'm seriously close to that point where I say f@#k the car, it can live outside... never had a home set up before..

I build serious wood in the morning.

You could squat off of it too.

No lie, I woke up yesterday with a pole you could pound nails in. I no-shit used it as a place to hang my towel while I gathered up some clothes.

Looks like you'd need a Miter Saw for the diagonal cuts on the braces. A decent one costs about $400, and, if you aren't adept with this piece of equipment, you might end the job with fewer fingers from when you started.

I don't think building your own gym equipment is as hard as it seems.

Take a look at this machine, is made by one single guy.

Also, Vince B built this.

Do what this guy does, his squat rack handles 600lbs easy,no drilling of holes, just extra wood  screwed onto the frame to hold the bar in the top position. If theres only you using it no need to have multiple holes.

It can't.  It's a squat stand, not a squat rack and it's solid.

And anyway, I own a full metal cage that I bought.  I wasn't going to fucking build a fucking wooden squat rack.  Ain't nobody got time for that.

But it still doesn't cost anywhere near a Rogue/Elite FTS piece.

Do you really think someone who doesn't do woodwork regularly is gonna make a diagonal cut with a cross cut saw without it looking like shit?

While far from a professional carpenter, I do have some training. If I were to attempt building that rack, I'd probably get it done, eventually, but there would be numerous fuck ups along the way.

why not just build a squat stand and a pullup bar

more and more, i'm starting to wonder what the point of a full "power rack" is for 99% of people, especially "bodybuilders"

Yeah, something like this seems doable if you're looking for a project:

so when was the last time you used that wooden piece of shit?

I have a full squat cage, and use the stands for supersets, or to rack the yoke I have for yoke walks.  My apologies that it works.
