This observation of the current election cycle is intriguing. The one thing about your theory that does not work for me is that Trump, (love him or hate him) is an egomaniac who clearly wants to be seen as a winner. To think he gives a rip about political parties or even politics, is really a stretch. He's got enough money to engage in whatever hobby he finds personally rewarding and to pick those which keep his ego massaged.
