According to the article I read this morning: His family is in financial trouble. Some asshat offered to give him $10K for a poster/banner they wanted to display in church but also promised $200K to the family if he were detained.

I'm no rocket-surgeon but do believe 15 years of hard labor qualifies as being detained.

Mr. Warmbier, who entered North Korea as part of a tour group, was detained on Jan. 2 as he was about to board a plane to leave the country. In announcing his arrest, the state news media said that Mr. Warmbier had visited with the intent of “bringing down the foundation of its single-minded unity.”

The charges against him claimed that the C.I.A., a secretive American university organization and a member of a church in Ohio had encouraged him to commit the “hostile act” of stealing a political poster from a wall in his hotel.

On the one hand, 15 years hard labor for a stolen fag is excessive.

On the other hand, hes in their culture. That is their laws and rules. The funny thing, is that Americans expect everyone who comes here to learn English and adapt to the American culture. Its fine if you think that. However, then you have to expect Americans to adapt to cultural values of other countries when there, and that includes X punishment for committing a crime.

Again, I don't agree with it, as I think its WAY too harsh of a punishment. But strange that he didn't realize how harsh it is over there.

It was a poster from his hotel room. When he checked out they must have inspected the room. Saw it was missing, had the cops go to the airport and detain him there.

They then accused him of being in the CIA and trying to destroy their country by stealing the poster. Pretty fucked up.

Almost true. Pretty much every document from the state here in Texas is printed in both Spainish and English.

What is strange is I believe he knew how fuck up it is there, and still fucking went. Believing that his over privilege ass was some how above their laws.
