The "accident of birth", and the privileges you are entitled to for being white.
Seriously, this is being taught in universities. My lady is currently in her final year in school, and she was listening to a Harvard lecture for her Ethics class. White guilt, "accident of birth", and privilege all came up. The stupid analogy about how white people have a better starting line in the race of life compared to all other races came up too.
I got angry and put in my earbuds
The environment affects people. Its a fact.
Anyone who grows up in a specific type of environment, whether they are black, white, spanish, asian, or middle-eastern, will have a better starting line in the race of life. Its just the way it is. Children born to middle class to wealthy parents, are going to have access to many different things that poor children will not have, and these experiences will have an affect on a range of cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioral components. The evidence is quite clear. So, yes, some children will have a better starting line in the race of life.
The thing is, this can happen to anyone. Ben Carson's kids will have a better starting line in the race of life when compared to a poor white kid. It is not exclusive to any one race. Any child who grows up in a certain environment (e.g., access to good education, loving parents, good nutrition, safe neighborhoods, etc.) will have somewhat of an advantage from the beginning. It doesn't mean this advantage will continue to play out for the rest of the child's life, but there is a better chance that it will lay a more solid foundation.
