Drinking Oatmeal??
« on: March 21, 2006, 07:35:31 AM »
I have been mixing the following in a blender for breakfast:

10 Liquid Egg Whites from Egg Whites Int
1/2 cup dry oats
1 scoop Opt Whey
1/2 tblsp Flax

Any reason that drinking the oats uncooked would be bad?  (besides taste?)  Can your body digest them ok?

No reason why eating uncooked oats would be bad.  Many times when I am on the road I just stuff a handful in my mouth and chew...slowly.  Actually eating them raw may aid slightly in digestion as you aren't breaking down the natural enzymes (but I can't tell a difference).  As long as you aren't scratching your throat you're fine.

Anyway how does this taste?  Sounds interesting...but I have never tried the EW International product.  I always make protein pancakes in the morning but this sounds like a good alternative if I am in a hurry.

With the Chocolate Whey, it doesn't taste too bad.  The oats make it gritty.  The Egg Whites Int are tasteless, so mixing them with Chocolate makes it taste like mixing with water, but with the thickness of milk.

After Mike Matarazzo was done eating his meals and couldn't eat anymore, he'd blend the leftovers in a blender then drink it.

there was a thread about this a while back.  according to Princess L, raw oats interfere with nutrient absorbtion.  something to do with phytic acid?

in a pinch, i like the instant oatmeal packets...Though not as unrefined as steel cut oats, the packets make it easy to dump into your mouth, then just swish the oats down w water....easy, no mess, and best of all, NO cleanup!

Is it harmful? No.  And in the interest of convenience on occassion, it's probably no big deal.
The thing about mineral absorbsion is that our bodies don't do it very well.  There are so many factors that make it difficult for us to get what we need.  Then, we stress out our bodies even further by lifting weights (it's a good stress, but stress nontheless).  This article spells it out somewhat.

Consuming raw grains inhibits mineral absorpsion and since we're already fighting an uphill battle, it's probably best to consume them cooked.

I make a huge pot of oatmeal (a combination of oat groat, steel cut and thick rolled) about once a month and freeze in individual serving size containers.  Makes it very convenient to nuke or throw semi-thawed into the blender when making a shake.

Pricess L is correct, but probably the only one that will go to that much trouble.

Sounds good actually... I hate oatmeal cooked...  this might actually make me wana start eating it.. im gonna try it.

Im curious about your protein pancakes though what is in them? You aren't using whey are you?

I love pancakes would be great if I could eat them again, since I stopped when I started eating solely to gain muscle.

Here's what I do:

5 egg whites
2 whole eggs
1 cup of oats
2-3 teaspoons of skim milk
1 teaspoon Splenda
Dash of cinnamon
Half a banana or 3-4 tablespoons of blueberries

Blend it all up. It's a really thin batter so it's better to use a waffle iron.ß

splenda, cinnamon, bannana, strawberries, etc. (whatever your diet allows)

I did this for a long time, and in my honest opinion, I just don't think it does any good.  I don't think the human body is really evolved in such a way that it can digest uncooked grains, oats, etc.  I have no scientific evidence, only anecdotal; I just know that when I was doing this I seemed to, erm...."pass" most of the oats on.  And if Princess L is correct about the deterred mineral absorption I would say that's even more of a reason to avoid it.  Just nuke the stuff, shovel some in your throat, take a swig of water, swallow and repeat.
