my guess is that he failed a drug test and they are keeping it quiet (wouldn't be  the first time from what I heard) or he is about to announce his own federation that will compete against the UFC.

Drug test failure is a possibility. Starting his own fed is far fetched. He would need to have people with very deep pockets to compete with the UFC. If Bellator/Viacom can't attract top talent into their ranks how could a fledging startup even compete? At best he'd have a feeder organization like invicta where the top talent go to the UFC.

Ya I agree. My guess is a failed drug test and Dana told him he would take care of it but that Conor has to give up a couple of percentage marks in Conors PPV money(millions) Conor probably freaked about that...There's no doubt Dana can make positive test disappear if he really wants to. I think Dana likes these guys testing positive so he can hold it over them which gives him leverage. Connor always seemed to have the leverage with the UFC in the past. A positive test changes that leverage...

Yes, the fighter from Portugal died... and Conor was ringside and witnessed the beating.

The UFC then wanted him to go talk shit with Nate Diaz at a press conference. They should've eased back.

But I still doubt that Conor is retiring

Fighters think it's about them.  It's not.  Give the UFC two months with ANY fighter, they can make him a household name.  McGregor thinks HE is the reason UFC200 would be so big.  Nope.  He works hard but he's still sparring in gyms without the decades of work that Dana White and others put into it, to make it the monster media machine that it is today.

Athletes do this... they have a very short-term skillset and want to make their money, but get greedy with "why should he make so much?  I deserve ten million".  Look, a million for a fight is awesome.  You were in high school goofing off while Dana White was making deals and working his butt off building the UFC.

Good to see they called his bluff.  He could have made a million bucks to fight for 25 minutes (or less) and ten times that in endorsements.  Fame went to his head.  Let him retire, everyone will talk GSP or whatever new name in a few weeks, and the UFC will go on, the machine that it is.

I disagree with that particular statement
