2006 Mr. Olympia-- And You Thought it Couldn't Get Any Worse
« on: March 21, 2006, 07:53:48 PM »
In an effort to find yet another way to fill seats to watch female bodybuilding, fitness, and figure, events that have proven time and again that they cannot sustain themselves at the professional level, AMI and the IFBB have elected to degrade the Mr. Olympia contest in an effort to sell more tickets for Friday night.  Instead of premier event standing on its own, Mr. Olympia now again has to share the stage with various aspects of the women's contests.  The Olympia judging has been moved to Friday night and must now share the time with the Ms. Olympia and Fitness finals.  If you thought the Mr. Olympia judging last year was abbreviated, with the judges opting for an early lunch over ensuring they got the placings right and providing a good show for the paying customers, can you imagine how little time will be given to it after being mixed in with two to three hours of female competition?   Or, perhaps they are really planning on a four or five hour show on Friday night.  If so, bring your No-Doz so you can stay awake to see what you really came to see.  And, if the posing round is not judged, it should be interesting to see how the guys look on Saturday after gorging on pizza and all of the other foods they could not eat while dieting for the show.

In addition, the Fitness finals have been added to the Mr. Olympia finals instead of expanding Mr. Olympia night show to really showcase all of the physiques, especially the top guys. We are likely to see the same abbreviated posing routines as last year, even for the top fifteen.   T and A has replaced the Challenge Round.  With all of the glitches of the Challenge Round last year, unlike the judging, we at least got to see the top five compared against each other for an extended period, whether you liked the end results or not.  One guarantee for this year is likely to be that if Ronnie wins again, his acceptance speech will be longer than they give him on stage for his posing routine.

All told, it could turn out to be worse than last year, since if you look at the contest schedule leading up to the Olympia, there could be over thirty guys on the stage at the end of September.  This is too many, but no matter how many there are, they all deserve to get a chance to be fairly compared all the way down the line up, and to show their stuff on the Olympia stage.  What do you want to bet that they are not going to get it?

I find it mind boggling, that after the complaints from last year over these same issues, AMI/IFBB would repeat their mistakes all over again, albeit in a somewhat different form.  It seems to me that they have a very different agenda than providing the best possible show for the vast majority of fans whose primary interest is in seeing the Mr. Olympia contest.  The logical thing would be to put all the women's contest on Friday, but then of course, the theater would be largely empty except for those VIP ticket holders that had nothing better to do in Las Vegas on a Friday night.  I have nothing but admiration for the hard work and dedication of the female athletes, as I am sure that most of the fans do, but that should not mean that we should have to accept a less than it could be Mr. Olympia because the women cannot not sell enough tickets on their own to support their sports.

I will be sitting in a VIP seat again this year; however, I am afraid I will leave the contest wondering why I went to the expense of attending only to be disappointed again.

Good post.  It seems that AMI always changes things that don't need fixing and ignores things that do.  This is another obvious attempt to cut costs by downsizing from 3 events to 2 (eliminating the Saturday pre-judging).  Now fans are forced to sit through fitness, figure, & female bodybuilding to see the men's pre-judging and finals.  Was anyone complaining about the old system?  How about fixing the real problems from last year like the lack of space for the Press Conference and Meet the Olympians or increasing the number of buses to the Convention Center.  What about moving the expo stage to an area where there is an unobstructed view?

Is the Olympia at the Orleans this year.  They don't have it on the schedule yet on the website for the Orleans.  Plus if you call no one knows anything about the Olympia being put on there this year.  Interesting.  AMI fucking up again.  Plus, I heard AMI is seeking to sell their 50% in the Olympia.  What a deal Pecker made for the Olympia.  They own 50% of the show but have 100% of the financial responsibility.  Good deal.  And you won't believe what company is interested in buying AMI out for their part of the Olympia.  WOW!  Another losing deal.  Bye Bye Mr. Olympia.

And its funny that they moved the Olympia to the Orleans from the Mandalay Bay. All because they wanted to save money.  When the MB decided not to deal with them they told them to find somewhere else.  Hell the deal was solidified through 2005 but they went in a demanded more for less.  So they pick the Orleans.  I personally like the Orleans to play at but to take the supposedly #1 biggest gradest BB show in the world from one of the most elegant and prestigious hotels in Vegas to a local off the strip hotel, AMI deserves to lose their ass. The have lost moeny ever since they became involved with Weiders, IFBB and BB, no wonder they want to bail now.

they should make the Olympia like the old AAU contests in the 40's and 50's where guys had to lift and show some flexibility along with posing, how many of those guys do you think could do that?

The Olympia was poor as hell this past year! i wish didn't waste my money. AMI is completely messing things up. from what i hear, the company is losing money and their mags SUCK ass. If the O is at the Orleans again, i'm skippin out. I'd rather gamble with my hard earned money at a nice hotel than go to the Orleans and the piss poor expo.

Whose buying them out?

Mirzy you kills me with your shit.

Flexibility?  Very few of these guys could do that.....

I still remember Paul Dillett cramping up on stage.

What a nightmare it would be if they forced these guys to contort in different positions.

exactly my point, guys back then like Grimek, Dillenger, Hilligen, Park, Ross and the rest not only posed but did the Olympic lifts onstage and guys like Grimek and Hilligen could military press 325 plus onstage plus do all kinds of balancing acts.

I would rather watch fitness routines than mens posing routines. Only one or two of the guys have entertaining routines, the rest try to be (artistic) and pose to opera music and r&b shit. I taped the Arnold and found myself fast forwarding 85% of the routines because I felt like I was gay porn or something. Seriously what is the deal with this shit...I guess alot of guys are trying to "reach out to a mainstream audience" by posing with an "artistic" routines....I think you need to focus on the fans you have instead of trying to appeal to people who could care less and losing the fans you have in the meantime. Branch and one or two other guys had decent routines, but most of the guys were slowly dancing around hitting poses to Michael Bolton and shit. If I wanted to see guys in thongs dancing to romantic R&B shit I would go to a fucking gay strip club. You won't catch somebody like Branch doing that shit!

the reason guys were able to push weight and shit on stage before is becasue they did not have to come in with the same level of conditioning that is now required...not even in the same ballpark. There are guys now days in better condition during the offseason that are more conditioned then those guys were on stage. When you are severly depleted your strenght goes way down and you are risking injury to lift heavy.

bullshit, today's guys are weak in both body and mind and the drugs have more to do with the conditioning than anything else, bb'ers today are pussies plain and simple.

I just think its funny the guys with no pics and close to 6,000 post are the experts of the sport. No accomplishments to speak of but plenty of criticism for those who are successful. To say that bodybuilders now days are pussies...you are calling me a pussy...yet you would never disprespect me to my face...or any of the pro's that you speak of.
