My only thought is this... if you make police a protected class, this opens up other occupations demanding it.
Is it a hate crime to punch a fireman? What about the admin staff at a hospital? Does this extend to the fat diabetic nurses at the local clinics too? If we protect cops, why not priests? Why aren't vets a protected class?
After a while, you have mailmen and clerks at the DMV demanding special treatment - and abusing these rights.
Everyone feels good applauding the police - but some would argue when it comes to running reds, speeding, drinking & driving off duty, etc... cops already get some extra free passes
and once you allow an occupation to do it - because they protect and serve - then you'll have 50 other occupations demanding it. Wait until the $15 an hour McD worker is a protected class under President Trump
