FBI agent Ron Hopper identified the suspect as Omar Mir Sadiq Mateen, 29, of Port St. Lucie, Fla.

I agree but part of the problem is that there isn't much a politician(or anyone else) can do to stop these crazy zealots.  You can't watch everyone and you can't take someones constitutional rights away just because you think they might be up to something(at least you aren't supposed to).  Also, cops are good at coming in after a crime and figuring out what happened.  They are not good at preventing crime or stopping crimes in progress.
