I'm not a fashion-horse when it comes to athletic shoes nor any other type of fashionable clothing, so I always wonder why there is so damn much interest nowadays when it comes to stuff y0u put on your feet.
I think it all started when well known athletes started endorsing these sneakers, Keds, or whatever their name is today.
And how the hell did the get to be so expensive?
Back when these shoes (Sneakers) were made of a canvas feeling material (Keds?) they would cost us 'Ked kids" about $8 and maybe less.
When I was stationed on OKINAWA one of the major Japanese athletic clothing companies came aboard and placed on big long tbles at least a thousand pairs of athletic shoes and told each of us to take any and all that we wanted free of charge and when you get back to the states, tell your friends about them.
I eventually asked him how they could afford to do this and he simply said, "Hell, Boysan! Each pair only cost us less than $3 to make, so take all you want!"
I said thanks and took two pair because we were only allowed to move out further east with a seabag and that was already filled to the top with olive-green 'fashion ware"!
To this day, I still don't buy expensive footwear and can never find any of those $3 ones.
