Berlin on Brexit
In the German capital, initial reactions to the predicted win for the Leave camp in the U.K.’s referendum showed shock, dismay, and questions about what should come next.
“Incredible.” Michael Fuchs, a senior conservative member of parliament and ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel, wrote in a tweet. “
Brexit damages all of Europe and most of all the UK.”
Ralph Stegner, a deputy chairman of the center-left Social Democratic Party, junior partner in the ruling coalition, wrote: “Sad day for Europe- bad for the European Union,
much worse for the British themselves. In a democracy, the majority decides.”
Looking beyond the result in a separate tweet, he wrote: “Now Europe must move jointly on the social front without the U.K.”
