I kid you Vince, but if you are going to use wood for a deck, while pine is the cheapest, it doesn't last long. Composites like TREX or its competitors will last much much longer. It is a bigger up front expense but since you are planning to stay there a long time, the cost will be negated. I know for some looking at the initial investment and how cheap pine is to composite seems the better value, but a guy like you, that looks at the big picture, certainly you can see the value of staying away from pine which rots and warps at a faster pace than almost any other wood.

Tres heats up too much in the summer.  PRESSURE treated pine is better and looks nicer

Well, it doesn't look nicer and it isn't better than composite.. but if that's all you can afford, I understand

Trex may last longer but I hate the stuff.  Hated it when I worked as Lowes.  Has nothing to do with affordability as I could simply get untreated wood and put a sealant on it myself...the cost difference is only about 1200 bucks but I simply like real wood deck.  They require more care than Trex but its worth it

I feel my job is to lead you to water. Forcing your head down to take a drink is beyond my control. Good luck!

Its my house and its my money.  The decision is always mine.   You're welcome to put Trex in your home but I simply hate the stuff.   I want real wood....not some composite material and that's what I'm going to get for my home.

pine is barely real wood but ok..and it is your money. You posted on a forum which opens up the possibility others will chime in as their right. If you want to build your deck on a home you say you will keep for years out of pine... by all means do so... but when you are 70 and still working, think back on this moment and the combination of financial decisions you made and recall those who tried to help and we'll call it even

Think of it as whiskey. Dewars is scotch, Johnny walker red is scotch, McCallan is single Malt Scotch. All are scotch whiskeys..

I have some wood working experience. Pine.. is the cheapest and softest wood commercially available. Ply board is cheaper but it doesn't fit here. Pine is the Kia of wood. Yes it is cheap, but you get what you pay for and will be replacing boards in short order.

So, let's see if I got the story. Goodrum, who definitely knows the value of a dollar, rejected buying a house and instead is saving heaps buying land and a mobile dwelling.

Something doesn't make sense because a solid house with a lower interest rate would surely be a better buy and investment.

Then we learn that there is a monthly management fee. Well, so much for getting out and off the grid. Instead, Melvin will live among other people who think like he does.

No internet! I mean, who would buy a new home and not have access to the internet? So his place to be must be almost rural and fuel to and from work will add up.

Then he will have to install a satellite dish or use a more expensive way to have more data. How on earth would someone run an internet business in those circumstances?

The more we learn the less impressed we are. Sure, Melvin is saving money but it doesn't sound that attractive now. Lots of expenses to come re setting things up.

$195 a month for a trailer court is pretty high. I paid 300 a year in a nice subdivision in Austin Tx. The list of things don't add up. BUT.... he is right in one regard. It is his money, he likely won't be asking any of us for personal loans so it isn't our business. I was just trying to impart some financial advice I've learned over the years but he seems headstrong to forge ahead so all we can really do is wish him luck and in 5 years I truly hope he proves me wrong

As long as I do preventative maintenance, it will be fine and will feel better on the feet than plastic....especially in the summer.  South Carolina has extremely hot weather which will literally turn a Trex deck into a foot blister...not to mention warp the boards.  Wood absorbs the heat better and won't radiate it back at me as with composite boards.

Now, with that being said...I did make a decision on my audio needs by purchasing a Bose SoundTouch 10 Wireless Speaker.  With my employee discount, it was only 129.99.  Perfect for the living room when I'm reading a book and want to listen to some music.   Nothing beats the sound and clarity of a Bose system.

Not if you don't need a 4 bedroom house.

Homes in the suburbs have HOA fees...what's your point.

No internet! I mean, who would buy a new home and not have access to the internet? So his place to be must be almost rural and fuel to and from work will add up.

There's no Cable or DSL internet lines.  Location is well worth it.   I can get Hughesnet or Viasat but I think you forgot who I work for you moron.  I'm also 10 minutes away from the highway and can get to work in 30 minutes.

I have a friend selling the Bose Soundtouch 20 for $70 dollars because they are moving back to Italy wish I had known you were in the market. I have the smaller bose for bed side to make cool rain noises so I didn't buy it. But yeah.. a LOT of things beat the clarity and sound of a Bose system

So I was right. You live out in the bushes. Half an hour each way to work is a long drive and uses up plenty of gas.

This location is more expensive the more we know about it. You have neighbours who live in mobile homes.

Guess you are going forward full speed ahead.

I'm not setting up the mobile home.  That's what I'm paying Clayton Homes to do.   They are also building the deck as well...one 10×20 in the front and a 4×5 in the rear with solid pine.   It's going to be fine, Henda.

I was just taking the piss and being a jerk vince don’t listen or take it serious, all joking aside, I’m genuinely glad you are getting your own place sorted

Can't wait for me, Henda and Fitness Frenzy to move in with Vince.

Can’t wait for the 3 of us to train shirtless on his deck on a hot summers afternoon before relaxing in the hot tub post workout sipping vodka and coke and listening to music

Woods like pine can work in protected areas, but they’ll begin to rot fairly quickly when fully exposed and may only last a few years. Pressure-treated pine lasts much longer thanks to chemical preservatives, making it great for decks.

When taking the effort to maintain the deck every 2 years ( repaint it) it can last a long time.

As already mentioned the pressure treated timber lasts ages is normally guaranteed for 10 years and If looked after will last a lot longer.

Personally I’d fix the joists for the deck frame on top of brick built piers rather than the usual method of timber posts concreted into the ground, the extra expense in doing this is worth it for the peace of mind of never having to replace rotten posts which is usually the first to go and are usually inaccessible after the deck is complete so cannot retreated like you can the rest of the deck
