Leather from China? It Might Be Dog Skin.
« on: July 31, 2016, 11:56:53 AM »

When American consumers shop for leather goods, it probably doesn’t enter their minds that their new belts, bags or shoes could be made not from cows or pigs but from cats and dogs. But not only is it a possibility, it’s hard for consumers to know what they have been sold.

Almost all that dog or cat leather comes from China. Now changes in Chinese culture, more pressure from the US and an upcoming trade agreement are combining to undermine this contraband trade.

The US banned the importation of dog and cat fur and skin, which is punishable by fines up to $10,000, as part of the Dog and Cat Protection Act of 2000. But distinguishing dog and cat leather from cow, sheep and pig leather is no easy matter, making it possible for unscrupulous manufacturers to pass off leather from dogs as leather from legal animals. A report by the Congressional Research Service shows that in 2014, the US imported $8.5bn in leather articles from China. It is unknown how much of each year’s total might be dog or cat leather.

The controversy over dog leather reached new heights in 2014 when an undercover investigator working for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) Asia discovered that dogs were being killed for leather production in China. According to Peta, which is calling on American consumers to forgo all leather goods in favor of vegan substitutes, employees at the facility said that 100-200 dogs were killed there a day and confirmed that the resulting leather was intended for export to and sale in the US market. The investigation shone a light on the underreported underbelly of the animal industry in China, which currently has no comprehensive animal welfare law.

“The dog leather investigation we did, groups that are in the country with us really had no idea,” said Jason Baker, Peta Asia’s vice-president of international operations. “While [the investigations] shock people internationally, they also shock people in China.”

There are reasons to believe they've been selling "marinated human flesh" to Africa, labeled as Corned Beef.

A really sick, fucked-up culture and it needs to be canceled imo.

What is the difference between dog and pig?

Pigs are even more intelligent and cuddlier than dogs.

Yet they spend their lives in small metal crates unable to move,in dark windowless dungeons.Abused along the way, having their pup's heads smashed into the floor in front of them often. Waiting until they are viciously slaughtered.

Yes, we all get the great logic of, "Why is one animal more important than any other animal? or "Why is it okay to kill a cow and not a dog?" Yes, thank you for your mind blowing logic. I think we all understand by now the hypocrisy of it all. I think this argument was used in a junior high school debate.

From an ethical standpoint, there probably is no difference. Both animals are breathing and alive and feel pain. However, human beings are hypocrites. We do prefer certain species over other species. We do like cuddly, furry ones over other species like snakes or reptiles. It's the way it. Given the strong emotional connection between humans and dogs/cats, the government felt it was necessary to protect such animals. It is hypocritical? Yes, but we live in a hypocritical world. If you don't like it, change it.

Just the fact that they don't seem to make a meaningful connection with anything but "money at all cost" should be enough to turn good people from their bullshit.  There is absolutely no end to that sort of thought, but the fires of Hell.

Really, that we take their word for anything at all, is just too stupid.  Bernie was the only candidate who insisted we deal with them and put them in their place.  The rest want to treat them as though they're just like us.

Why is a dog more important than a cow?

The dog was the first domesticated animal.  We have 20,000 years of cooperation together.

Good thing you posted this. I came close to ordering a leather jacket from the internets and they claimed it was a Chinese made leather jacket. They said it was leather but not broken in leather so it was stiff rather than soft. This was a motorcycle jacket like marlon Brando had and also Arnold in the terminator. The thing that kept me from ordering was the sizing. I'm tall and have a long torso and knew anything from China was going to end up looking like a half jacket. Now I know why it was so cheap.

It's very difficult to discuss anything with people who believe being internally consistent with their arguments is the only parameter. Humans are emotional beings, whether we like it or not. There are absolutely no black and whites.

Haha yes, and when those same people get cut off in traffic they swear they will snuff out that person's "worthless life" because they have to sit through another cycle of traffic lights.
