What if HBK went to WCW with Hall and Nash
« on: August 02, 2016, 05:51:36 AM »
Listening to HBK on Ric Flair show and was asked why he never went to WCW..besides being locked into a contract, Vince convinced Shawn that he would not have the creative freedom McMahon gave him...

Had me thinking, if HBK went to WCW and Hitman stayed in WWF, what the landscape past and present would have looked like

* No New Age Outlaws
* Hitman would have had a longer career, feuds including Angle, Edge, possibly Punk
* No Montreal Screw Job

What else??

I'm not certain what kind of "creative freedom" Shawn had in the Fed.

According to Meltzer's "dirt sheet," WWF 's ratings and overall numbers were their WORST when Shawn was in the driver's seat with the belt.

IMO, Shawn stuck around because the old man was allegedly paying him around $15K/week on retainer.
There's also a plethora of rumors concerning Shawn taking it from Vince while bent over.

Had HBK gone to WCW, I predict they would have simply misused him as they did most NY talent.
Think Bret!

As for Bret, he resented the landscape WWF was taking. He probably would have insisted on booking himself into angles with only solid workers who weren't involved in the risqué story lines that were taking over.
Think Hakushi.

He would have grown stale in the "attitude" climate and been gradually phased out.

Ultimately, the Montreal Screw Job was one of the greatest things to happen to pro-wrestling!

That actually almost happened but HBK resigned in 1996 for 750,000 per 5 years right before the money crept up. Shortly after Bret Hart signed for 1.5 mill for 3 years which pissed Shawn off royally. Shawn had more pull than people realize in WWE. He was the ONLY wrestler to take 3 years off after he pretzeled his back while still being on WWE payroll and getting paid. This pissed off a shit load of wrestlers who hated Shawn for it.

That is very popular "lore" around the Stamford office.

Very interesting...

In my original post I put New Age Outlaws buy meant to say Degeneration X

In listening to a podcast with Bischoff, he said when Brett arrived, he was bitter and didn't really seem interested in being there.

I wonder if Shawn chirping in Vince's ear was the reason McMahon rescinded his offer to Brett telling him to go to WCW. I forget what Vince's contract was financially but it was like 20 yrs...

For me personally, was never really a fan of either Brett OR HBK

"Hell everybody knows it."

The story I've heard was Warrior on the bearskin rug at the McMahon mansion.

Vince had his favorites.

I highly doubt that Vince and Warrior were boy toys to Vince.

Agreed. VKM had his favorites and that upset the rest of the boys.

Honky Tonk Man's videos are entertaining, but I would take them more seriously if he weren't usually speaking at some low-rent flea market.

Shawn in WCW could have ended up going the Scott Hall route, or worse.

I actually enjoyed Honky's shoot interviews. He is very well spoken and he basically hit the nail on the head with a lot of topics including the HOF, Bret and Shawn, Steroids and drugs, certain personalities.

I thought his criticisms were spot on. Especially on the Bret / Shawn and HOF talk

 He comes across as bitter in those.
